This text explores the symbolic articulation between shamanism, male pregnancy and the rites of first menstruation among the Galibi of French Guyana. These institutions contribute to construct constitutive categories of the notion of person and of gender. The study of interdictions that define their boundaries show that the same general categorical polarisation operate. In this context, it appears that shamanism and couvade are two reversed but complementary poles of the same general cultural model. In conclusion, shamanism disappears as an autonomous site as it was reified by anthropology.

// The essays gathered in Letras escarlata consider new ways of representing the (gendered) female body through contemporary symbolic, literary and cultural collective imagination. How are patriarchal models and codes subverted in the field of communication and the arts? What social and ideological changes underpin this paradigm shift? These problematic issues are addressed from different scientific and linguistic fields—from anthropology and philosophy to literary and cultural studies—with the aim of opening new lines of thought from a gender studies perspective.
