Le Maroc, ses riads, la magie de ses intérieurs... A Marrakech, lengouement pour les riads ne cesse daugmenter depuis une vingtaine dannées et de plus en plus de projets de réhabilitations et de rénovations voient le jour. Mais avec quelles conséquences ? Nous nous sommes posés la question suivante : " Ces petits coins de paradis que sont les riads, sont-ils condamnés à disparaître dans le béton qui envahit de plus en plus la ville de Marrakech ? "La diversité et le manque de cohérence dans le paysage architectural nous interpellent. Quels sont les facteurs qui influencent les incohérences architecturales et les pratiques diversifiées liées aux types de rénovations et de réhabilitations de la médina et plus spécifiquement des maisons traditionnelles qui la composent ?Nous aborderons dix thèmes en vue de répondre à cette question. Chacun des thèmes vont nous permettre de nous positionner entre tradition et modernité, entre cohérence et incohérence, entre valorisation et dévalorisation de larchitecture de la médina.

Cet ouvrage entend contribuer au renouveau théorique de l’étude des médinas au Maroc, en rendant compte de l’étendue et de la nature d’un phénomène à peine envisageable au début des années quatre-vingt-dix. Les auteurs abordent, en effet, les mutations en cours dans les médinas à partir de la perspective de la gentrification, c'est-à-dire du phénomène de réinvestissement de quartiers anciens, souvent fort détériorés, par des nouveaux résidents aisés, qui y impulsent des dynamiques rénovatrices. S’appuyant sur des enquêtes de terrain dans plusieurs villes marocaines, les études présentées s’intéressent aux profils et aux motivations de ces nouveaux habitants, à leurs interactions avec les anciens habitants, au rôle de l’Etat, aux rapports entre gentrification, tourisme, patrimonialisation et cosmopolitisme. Tout en soulignant les dynamiques convergentes et les caractéristiques que les médinas marocaines partagent avec le modèle « classique » de la gentrification, elles pointent également les spécificités locales, y compris entre les différentes médinas. L’ensemble de ces études et des entretiens avec des personnalités impliquées dans la sauvegarde du patrimoine fournit une première perspective synthétique sur ce phénomène.

Questions the way we understand the idea of community through an investigation of the term "historically black "In Historically Black, Mieka Brand Polanco examines the concept of community in the United States: how communities are experienced and understood, the complex relationship between human beings and their social and physical landscapes—and how the term “community” is sometimes conjured to feign a cohesiveness that may not actually exist. Drawing on ethnographic and historical materials from Union, Virginia, Historically Black offers a nuanced and sensitive portrait of a federally recognized Historic District under the category “Ethnic Heritage—Black.”Since Union has been home to a racially mixed population since at least the late 19th century, calling it “historically black” poses some curious existential questions to the black residents who currently live there. Union’s identity as a “historically black community” encourages a perception of the town as a monochromatic and monohistoric landscape, effectively erasing both old-timer white residents and newcomer black residents while allowing newer white residents to take on a proud role as preservers of history.Gestures to “community” gloss an oversimplified perspective of race, history and space that conceals much of the richness (and contention) of lived reality in Union, as well as in the larger United States. They allow Americans to avoid important conversations about the complex and unfolding nature by which groups of people and social/physical landscapes are conceptualized as a single unified whole. This multi-layered, multi-textured ethnography explores a key concept, inviting public conversation about the dynamic ways in which race, space, and history inform our experiences and understanding of community.
