Cette histoire des médias décrit leurs formes et leurs usages au fil des siècles, les acteurs, créateurs ou concepteurs à l'origine de leurs transformations, ainsi que leurs évolutions en terme de fonctions, mais aussi de contenus et de moyens de transmission. ©Electre 2021 De tout temps, l'Homme a eu besoin de relations et de sociabilité pour échanger avec ses pairs, qu'ils soient à proximité ou à des distances de plus en plus grandes qu'il a fallu vaincre ; le préfixe télé signifie simplement "à distance", en grec ancien. Cette nécessité de communication s'est toujours appuyée sur des technologies, les a même parfois suscitées, allant des pigments utilisés dans l'art pariétal au codage de la convergence numérique, sans oublier l'imprimerie, pour la presse et l'affichage, la théorie générale des ondes pour la radio et la télévision. Au sens étymologique du terme, les médias sont ces moyens techniques. Dans ce livre, un média sera un couple composé d'un support technique et d'un contenu, les fonctions des médias s'exprimant aussi par des idées portées par le support et accessibles grâce à deux sens que sont la vue et l'ouïe, mobilisant la lumière et le son. Pour s'exprimer, communiquer, transmettre, convaincre, témoigner, divertir, apprendre, manipuler, l'Homme a fait preuve d'une imagination sans borne : peinture rupestre, écriture, volumen, codex, livre, coursier, peinture, télégraphe, photographie, cinéma, téléphone, radio, télévision, Internet... Nul doute que ces créations, le plus souvent collectives, se poursuivront avec la même inventivité.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the use of experimental approaches to the study of media histories and their cultures. Doing media archaeological experiments, such as historical re-enactments and hands-on simulations with media historical objects, helps us to explore and better understand the workings of past media technologies and their practices of use. By systematically refl ecting on the methodological underpinnings of experimental media archaeology as a relatively new approach in media historical research and teaching, this book aims to serve as a practical handbook for doing media archaeological experiments. Doing Experimental Media Archaeology: Practice is the twin volume to Doing Experimental Media Archaeology: Theory, authored by Andreas Fickers and Annie van den Oever.

Mediengewalt ist immer wieder ein Thema öffentlicher Debatten. Insbesondere nach spektakulären Amokläufen taucht regelmäßig die Frage auf, ob Medien ihre Nutzer zu Gewalttätern programmiert und so die Tat verursacht haben. Dabei ist der kausale Zusammenhang alles andere als geklärt: Obwohl die empirische Mediengewaltforschung mit großem Aufwand betrieben wird, hat sie bis heute keine konsensfähige Antwort gefunden. Diese Studie sucht keine weitere Lösung, sondern fragt, wie sich die Kausalformel »Mediengewalt« historisch herausgebildet hat und welcher Gewinn darin liegt, die Mediengewalt-Debatte beständig mit ungeklärtem Wissen zu versorgen. »Gerade diejenigen Stimmen, die in der aktuellen Debatte ein staatliches Verbot von Killerspielen nicht zielführend finden, begründen ihr Urteil damit, dass man mit einem Verbot die Nutzer weniger gut kontrollieren könne als durch anhaltende und dauernde Aufmerksamkeit den Kindern gegenüber. Since the introduction of photography by commercial studio photographers and the colonial state in Kenya, this global medium has been intensely debated and contested among Muslims on the cosmopolitan East African coast. This book does not only explore the making, circulation, and consumption of popular photographs, but also the other side, their rejection and obliteration, an essential aspect of a medium's history that should not be neglected. It deals with various »social spaces of refusal« in the local Muslim milieu and in that of »traditional« spirit mediums in which (gendered) visibility was (and is) contested in various and creative ways. It focuses on the »aesthetics of withdrawal«: the various ways and techniques that process the photographic act as well as the photographic image to theatricalize the surface of the image in new ways by veiling, masking, and concealing. In a fragmented historical perspective, Heike Behrend seeks to complement, decenter, and counter the history of photography as it has been told by the West and to narrate another history beginning with preceding local media such as textiles and spirit possession.
