Croatia needs to find new sources of economic growth to attain income convergence with the EU; this was true before the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and it is an even more urgent challenge now. Improvements in freight logistics, which permeate the tradeable economy and domestic commerce, can become a catalyst of productivity growth, business resilience, and environmentally sustainable economic expansion for Croatia. Efficient logistics facilitate trade by improving access to markets through connectivity improvements and cost competitiveness. This report takes stock of Croatia's logistics sector at the national level. It aims to describe the sector's supply-demand composition, identify challenges and opportunities to improve sectoral performance, and recommend public policy measures to address these challenges and meet the opportunities at hand.

The international shipping industry covers around 90% of the world trade. The bulk transport of raw materials, affordable import and export of food and manufactured goods between inter continents won’t be possible without the maritime transport. The requirements from the maritime industry and the classification societies related with safety, energy efficiency, environmental protection, etc. force us to look for more efficient and cost effective technologies. This calls for the development of an integrated multi-disciplinary and -objective design optimisation platform to be used in early design stage of traditional ship design process. The thesis focuses on demonstrating the application of an automated platform for the structural optimisation of the midship of a typical Ro-Pax vessel in the early stage of ship design process. It is based on the undergoing researches on the framework of European Research Council funded project, HOLISHIP (Holistic Optimisation of Ship Design and Operation for Life Cycle), which focuses on developing innovative holistic design optimisation methods for European maritime industry. The thesis covers the development of a parametric model of the midship using commercial finite element software ANSYS® and which will eventually be used for optimisation using modeFRONTIER® with an aim to reduce the total weight of the structure. A number of in-house tools/ modules are also developed and integrated in the automated platform. The study also extended to implement surrogate models to replace the finite element analysis which allow the customer to reduce the calculation time.

A large proportion of the least developed countries are landlocked and their access to world markets depends on the availability of a trade corridor and transit systems. Based on empirical evidence from World Bank projects and assessments in Africa, Central Asia, and elsewhere, this paper proposes a microeconomic quantitative description of logistics costs. The paper theoretically and empirically highlights that landlocked economies are primarily affected not only by a high cost of freight services but also by the high degree of unpredictability in transportation time. The main sources of costs are not only physical constraints but widespread rent activities and severe flaws in the implementation of the transit systems, which prevent the emergence of reliable logistics services. The business and donor community should push toward implementation of comprehensive facilitation strategies, primarily at the national level, and the design of robust and resilient transport and transit regimes. A better understanding of the political economy of transit and a review of the implementation successes and failures in this area are needed.

This Country Private Sector Diagnostic (CPSD) identifies opportunities to stimulate sustainable economic growth and development by harnessing the power of the private sector in Angola. Applying a sectoral lens, it leverages the private sector's knowledge and experience to accelerate transformational investment. It also puts forward operational recommendations highlighting strategic entry points for diversification and growth, while addressing key constraints to private sector engagement. The CPSD discusses implementation principles inspired by international good practices. It informs World Bank and IFC strategies, paving the way for joint programming to create markets and unlock private sector potential.
