L'internationalisation de l'activité bancaire et la construction de la Communauté européenne, qui est l'un des piliers de l'Union, bouleversent le droit bancaire contemporain dont l'étude ne peut se borner au seul droit interne. Ce dernier doit être nécessairement situé dans une double perspective, communautaire et internationale, ce qui conduit à faire une large place, dans la mesure du possible, aux directives communautaires, à la Convention de Rome sur la loi applicable aux obligations contractuelles ainsi qu'aux règles élaborées par la Chambre de commerce internationale. Après avoir développé les notions élémentaires du droit bancaire qui concernent à la fois les professionnels et la clientèle, l'auteur insiste sur quelques notions complémentaires qu'il regroupe en deux rubriques afin de mettre en exergue les deux volets de l'activité bancaire : les opérations de clientèle ainsi que les relations interbancaires et les opérations intéressant les professionnels.
