Abstract

Prepared by the Technical Committee on Composite Construction of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE. This report synthesizes the existing information on hybrid coupled wall (HCW) systems into helpful recommendations pertaining to their seismic analysis and design. HCW systems are lateral-force-resisting systems composed of reinforced concrete walls coupled by steel beams. Extensive research has shown that HCW systems possess the necessary combination of stiffness, strength, and toughness for application in regions of moderate to high seismicity. This book offers two methods for system design: a prescriptive method based on linear elastic analysis and an all-purpose performance-based method that can be used in conjunction with linear or nonlinear analysis techniques. Guidelines for preliminary system proportioning are also provided along with recommendations for component design. This book is valuable to engineers and allied professionals involved in seismic analysis.

Abstract

It is of major importance for design purposes that long-term effects coming from the sea are accurately predicted by classification societies, which must not be exceeded during the lifetime operation of a given vessel. It is encountered that Inland-Navigation Bureau Veritas rules (NR247) do not assess the seakeeping behaviour and do not predict sea loads adequately. To deal with this, a development of empirical-formulas was carried to account for inland-vessel responses when operated in stretches of water within the range of navigation of 0.6 m ≤ Hs ≤ 2 m, based on linear potential-flow theory, boundary element method and the 3D linear panel method theory. A frequency-domain linear analysis for an impossed constant speed of 10 knots is taken into account. Using the Belgian Coastal Scatter Diagram, it was found the hydrodynamic long-term response for a return period of 17 years, composed of motions, accelerations, relative elevation, shear forces and bending moments; encountered in a set of 46 inland vessels. Then, by mean of a regression process, a set of empirical equations was proposed accounting for these effects. They were validated against an additional set of 13 direct-calculation results, showing good agreement. Finally, to take into account discrepancies originated from lineartheory assumptions, proposed empirical models are corrected by taking into account nonlinear hydrodynamic effects.

Abstract

Despite being one of the most popular sports worldwide, basketball has received limited research attention compared to other team sports. Establishing a strong evidence base with high-quality and impactful research is essential in enhancing decision-making processes to optimize player performance for basketball professionals. Consequently, the book entitled Improving Performance and Practice in Basketball provides a collection of novel research studies to increase the available evidence on various topics with strong translation to practice in basketball. The book includes work by 40 researchers from 16 institutions or professional organizations from 9 countries. In keeping with notable topics in basketball research, the book contains 2 reviews focused on monitoring strategies to detect player fatigue and considerations for travel in National Basketball Association players. In addition, 8 applied studies are also included in the book, focused on workload monitoring, game-related statistics, and the measurement of physical and skill attributes in basketball players. This book also has a strong focus on increasing the evidence available for female basketball players, who have traditionally been under-represented in the literature. The outcomes generated from this book should provide new insights to inform practice in many areas for professionals working in various roles with basketball teams.

Abstract

Many constructions are built with reinforced or prestressed concrete, and most of them are designed or expected to resist earthquake actions in addition to gravity loads. To limit the effects of seismic events on reinforced or prestressed concrete structures, many attempts have been made by researchers in order to (i) improve the knowledge of the response of materials (steel bars and concrete) and members by means of laboratory tests, (ii) develop numerical and capacity models, (iii) enhance procedures for the dynamic analysis and assessment of the seismic performance of structures and (iv) suggest innovative interventions for the seismic retrofit of old and damaged reinforced or prestressed concrete structures. This Special Issue is a collection of 11 important research works that cover a wide range of problems related to the previously mentioned research fields. Both researchers and practical engineers are expected to greatly benefit from this Special Issue in view of their own work and for a better comprehension of the response of r.c. members and structures.
