Abstract

It is a challenge to create holistic lighting design in times of advancing mechanization, but it is the right thing to do in terms of achieving sustainability in the use of light and energy. The renowned lighting designer Ulrike Brandi explains this attitude with the words, "It’s better to make the most of natural light from the start, rather than compensating with artificial light afterwards". The guideline Light Nature Architecture proves how essential, but also simple, it is to integrate natural light into architectural planning and thus into the design of healthy and pleasant living and working environments. This richly illustrated handbook is structured based on natural light phenomena and combines Ulrike Brandi’s wealth of experience, theoretical principles, and design methods to create a reference work and source of inspiration. Richly illustrated basic work for holistic lighting design Insight into the extensive practical experience of the renowned lighting designer Ulrike Brandi Source of inspiration for professional planners, architects and laypeople Available in German and English (Light Nature Architecture, ISBN 9783035624151)

Abstract

Dynamic artificial light in museums In galleries and museums, one’s perception of art, space, and atmosphere is largely determined by lighting. But which light settings should art and museum experts and exhibition designers choose, and on what basis are those choices made? Pioneering LED technologies make customized lighting scenarios possible, turning artificial light into an interactive material in museum architecture – not only in terms of design practice, but also in terms of real-time spatial experiences. Computer-controlled lighting technologies are breaking boundaries, allowing the individual to take full control of lighting design. Light Up explores the potential of dynamic artificial lighting technologies in museum architecture, offering new insights into the use of light in exhibition spaces. How LED technologies can be used to develop customized lighting scenarios Studies in the real context of art institutions as well as programming of interactive light simulations Documents the research project “White Cube Teleporter” Dynamisches Kunstlicht im Museum In Galerien und Museen wird die Wahrnehmung von Kunst, Raum und Atmosphäre wesentlich durch den Faktor Licht bestimmt.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The book explores evolving perspectives on furniture, interior, spatial and architectural design, providing a multifaceted view of how the design discipline and practice deal with the complex and ever-evolving interplay between the physical and the digital realms. It explores the new frontiers of digitally enhanced design, investigating how computation capabilities impact the design discipline and designers’ thinking and practice. Today more than ever, the design discipline must cope with the need to absorb technical skills and dialogue with traditionally distant domains. The core competencies in the Human Computer Interaction field are becoming essential to every design branch: the computational power is entering the design process, modifying how products and spaces are designed, how they are produced, and how they will impact the daily life of users. The book explores these novel frontiers, proposing captivating portraits of digitally enhanced design possibilities, from tools and processes to expressive potentials. Industry 4.0 and traditional craftsmanship hybridize in view of a circular and just economy for the furniture sector, imagining new approaches towards the European Green Deal. The sensing capabilities are intertwined with the materials to create a new form of animated objects, proposing a novel design approach beyond the user-centered one. The computational power of lighting design tools is entering the complex BIM methodology, exploring the problematic integration between the two worlds, and proposing solutions to support the design activity. Artificial Intelligence reframes the domestic landscape, thanks to Science Fiction Scenarios, to stimulate reflection on the designer’s role in framing utopic/dystopic futures. Finally, data drive the design of adaptive morphologies, exploring the context of computational design with a conceptual framework and reflecting on how robotic design can contribute to architecture.

Abstract

This Special Issue addresses a topic of great contemporary relevance; in developed countries, most of peoples’ time is spent indoors and, depending on each person, the presence in the home ranges from 60% to 90% of the day, and 30% of that time is spent sleeping. Taking into account these data, indoor residential environments have a direct influence on human health. In addition to this, in developing countries, significant levels of indoor pollution make housing unsafe, with a detrimental impact on the health of inhabitants. Housing is therefore a key health factor for people all over the world, and various parameters such as air quality, ventilation, hygrothermal comfort, lighting, physical environment, and building efficiency, among others, can contribute to healthy architecture, and the conditions that can result from the poor application of these parameters.
