Abstract

D'origine libano-irakienne, Salma Samar Damluji est diplômée de l'AA School of Architecture à Londres. Docteur en architecture, elle a mené ses recherches dans différents pays du Moyen-Orient et occupe actuellement la chaire d'architecture islamique à l'Université américaine de Beyrouth. Elle a publié de nombreux ouvrages, sur l'histoire de l'architecture des pays islamiques et sur l'architecture de terre, fruit de ses études de terrain et de ses rencontres.

Abstract

Architecture for the Poor describes Hassan Fathy's plan for building the village of New Gourna, near Luxor, Egypt, without the use of more modern and expensive materials such as steel and concrete. Using mud bricks, the native technique that Fathy learned in Nubia, and such traditional Egyptian architectural designs as enclosed courtyards and vaulted roofing, Fathy worked with the villagers to tailor his designs to their needs.
