Abstract

Cognitive impairment in older adults usually progresses slowly and is caused by a variety of brain diseases, most commonly Alzheimer's disease. The resulting memory loss and impaired executive function call for therapeutic strategies that will optimize functioning. Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Cognitive Impairment (IPT-ci), builds upon traditional IPT to improve coping ability and help older patients and their caregivers manage the effects of cognitive impairment, particularly in the early phase when behavior changes are often misunderstood. IPT-ci can also provide a template for long term

Abstract

Depression is a common problem for individuals in their senior years. Conservative estimates suggest that more than five million seniors over 65 are suffering from severe depression. How can you help your older clients manage depressed mood? This Therapist Guide outlines a three-phase program based on the principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy. Designed specifically for use with older adults, this treatment generally is delivered over the course of 16 - 20 sessions. In Phase 1 of the intervention, clients are introduced to the program and are encouraged to develop goals for therapy. The focus of Phase 2 is on helping the client acquire the cognitive and behavioral skills needed to meet the therapy goals. It is during this phase that clients learn the benefits of participating in pleasant activities, how to challenge negative thinking, how to manage feelings of anger and frustration through relaxation, and how to improve communication skills. Phase 3 deals with termination and how to maintain the gains obtained in therapy.

Abstract

This book illustrates the imperative for late-life depression prevention. It introduces a broad range of approaches to prevention, and provides detailed examples of clinical and research applications of late-life depression prevention – all with consideration of medical and scientific, social, economic and global health perspectives.  Current guidelines and tools for assessing depressive disorders among older adults are discussed, with a view toward applications for prevention. Written by experts in the field, this text also considers policy and economic implications for preventing late-life depression, such as  the many complicating conditions – such as diabetes, hypertension or heart disease – that may co-occur with depression among older adults and that may incur higher total healthcare costs.   Prevention of Late-Life Depression: Current Clinical Challenges and Priorities is an important new volume that will be useful to all providers that are concerned with the mental health of our rapidly expanding aged population.
