In de 'eeuw van de stad' zijn platteland en dorp wat in de vergetelheid geraakt en uit het vizier van de planners verdwenen. Toch liggen ook hier belangrijke opgaven. Het Beeldkwaliteitsplan dat plusoffice architects opmaakte voor de gemeente Nijlen formuleert heldere recepten voor een vernieuwde toekomst van het dorp in Vlaanderen. Hoe ziet het Vlaamse dorp eruit na de betonstop? Hoe organiseren we de verdichting? Waar kunnen we ontharden? Hoe introduceren we nieuwe vormen van mobiliteit? With No. 54, the 'Is This Rural?' series continues with a second installment that reflects on the binary city-country vision, as opposing scenarios, and on the intermediate space spontaneously having arisen between both. It is also an inventory, a synchronously-displayed timeline of the events that have taken place in these three territories over the last 250 years. Meanwhile, the Culturing the Country, Cultivating the City section is a selection of projects that overthrows the prejudices related to urban and rural tasks. The third and final instalment in the “Is This Rural?” series focuses on the intermediate territory: the most indeterminate in terms of use, the setting where the most complex situations occur, and where the mix of uses is part of its identity. An analysis of this diffuse and increasingly expanded portion of the environment originates a series of explorations towards possible futures in which architecture is obliged to enter into dialogue with the natural sciences. Besides essays by architect and urbanist Javier Mozas and Wrocław-based PROLOG +1, it also features works by Colectivo C733, B-Architecten, Atelier Fanelsa, KOSMOS Architects, Rural Office for Architecture, and others.
