Au XIXe siècle de nouvelle imageries (Champ-fleury) apparaissent, qui viennent modifier le face à face traditionnel de la littérature avec la peinture : la photographie, l'image d'Épinal, la statue de rue, la lithographie, le bibelot kitsch figuratif, l'affiche de la réclame, l'estampe japonaise envahissent le réel et envahissent dans le même temps les lieux et les milieux de la fiction. Écrivains iconophiles et écrivain iconophobes vont faire de ces nouvelles images soit les signes détestables d'un monde qui s'américanise et où les modèles régénérateurs et provocateurs de nouvelle esthétiques. Un nouvel imaginaire se met en place, que sollicitent les caractéristiques formelles, sémiotiques et pragmatiqes, de ces nouvelles images : platitude, couleurs crues, juxtapositions incongrues, naïveté, jeux sur le négatif, lecture rapide et en zigzag, cloisonnement des paysages, cadrages descriptifs décentrés, rapidité de la multiplication, changements d'échelles, formes brèves et miniaturisées, fragmentation de l'intrigue en scènes et tableaux. L'image littéraire (à lire) ne pouvait pas ne pas en être modifiée.
