Cet ouvrage accompagne l'exposition "Soleils noirs" présentée au musée Louvre-Lens du 25 mars au 13 juillet 2020. Couleur du paradoxe, le noir est-il une absence de lumière, un vide, ou une somme réjouissante de toutes les couleurs, un éblouissement? Soleils noirs plonge le lecteur dans l'observation fascinante de cette tonalité au symbolisme pluriel dans les arts occidentaux, de l'antiquité à nos jours. Une immersion qui débute par une expérience du noir familière, grâce aux représentations artistiques de thématiques omniprésentes dans l'histoire de l'art, comme la nuit et son ciel noir. Si la plongée dans le noir constitue une expérience physiologique connue de chacun, la couleur noire forme un élément structurant mais ambigu de la représentation du sacré, à la fois couleur de tous les commencements, de l'infini, de l'intemporel, mais aussi celle de la mort et de l'ignorance. Il y a dans cette ambiguïté autant de crainte que de fascination, tous deux ferments du sentiment mélancolique, cher aux artistes pour sublimer dans leurs créations la beauté et la sensualité du noir.

Painting "without color" has long held a fascination for artists. In this striking and original book, the authors explore how and why artists from the 15th century to the present have chosen to paint in black, white, and shades of gray. Sometimes artists used trompe l'oeil monochromatic effects to represent other media, such as sculpture, prints, or photography; others have consciously limited their palette as a means of re-focusing the viewer's attention, while contemporary artists such as Gerhard Richter and Bridget Riley have often found inspiration in pushing black and white to its limits, and in new directions.
