Real-time and networked embedded systems are important bidirectional bridges between the physical and the information worlds. Embedded intelligence is increasingly pervading industry, infrastructure, and public and private spaces, being identified as an emerging societal and economic “neural system” that supports both societal changes and economic growth. As cost/performance improves, objects connected in everyday life increasingly rely on embedded intelligence in an ever-growing array of application fields, specialized technologies, and engineering disciplines. While this process gradually builds the IoT, it exposes a series of specific non-trivial timing and other extra-functional requirements and system properties that are less common in other computing areas. The ten articles in this book propose solutions to the specific open problems of cyber–physical and real-time embedded systems applicable to both traditional application domains, such as industrial automation and control, energy management, automotive, aerospace and defense systems, as well as emerging domains, such as medical devices, household appliances, mobile multimedia, gaming, and entertainment systems.]

Information systems are a critical component of business success today. Unfortunately, many companies do not truly understand what an information system is; where, when, and how it should be implemented; or the effects of integrating it into the organization. As such, we continue to see implementation horror stories of projects run amuck--going over time and over budget--or information systems that never get fully implemented, requiring "work-arounds" by employees in order to get things done. Why is this the case? Are information systems so poorly developed, or is it more a case of companies not understanding what information systems are and how to integrate them into their business processes? The premise of this book is that it is the latter. If decision makers better understood what information systems are, how they worked, and, most importantly, what constitutes a successful information system; then implementations would be smoother, and benefits from information systems would be greater and last longer. The intent of this book is to help organizations better utilize their information systems by understanding the fundamental purpose of these systems within the business organization. This book will help readers analyze business processes with an eye toward how data is created, transferred, analyzed, and used within the organization. From this understanding, the user can then design, build, and implement information systems that accurately reflect the flow of the business processes, adjust quickly to support critical functions, and provide efficient and effective value-added services to employees to maximize the profitability of the company.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common and serious medical condition characterized by interrupted breath during sleep. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the gold-standard treatment for OSA. Patients’ compliance to (CPAP) therapy is essential to get optimal treatment, but CPAP compliance rates are suboptimal. Internet of Things (IoT) is a new concept that enables objects to be connected to each other, sensed and controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure. One of the recent IoT applications in health is telemonitoring CPAP. A 6 weeks study was launched with 71 patients in the sleep unit at Andre Renard clinic, starting from January till the mid February 2016. The aim was to investigate the effect of the switch to an IoT based CPAP (Wi-Fi CPAP) compared to the traditional CPAP treatment used before. Different elements have been studied, adherence rates, effect on hospital work load, effect on hospital informatics and human structure, and impact on time and cost in general. To overcome the privacy concerns, patients signed a “privacy consent” before treatment initiation. The results showed increased CPAP adherence rate (96.61%), decreased number of patients who discontinued the treatment (only 2 patients), increased specialist availability, and time saving. The new CPAP was easy to use by both patients and caregivers. It didn’t add additional work to the staff, nor required specific changes in IT or human structure in the clinic. This study demonstrated initially promising results of the switch from traditional CPAP to Wi-Fi CPAP in the treatment of (OSA)

Information and communication technology (ICT) is reponsible for up to 10% of world power consumption. In particular, communications and computing systems are indispensable elements in ICT; thus, determining how to improve the energy efficiency in communications and computing systems has become one of the most important issues for realizing green ICT. Even though a number of studies have been conducted, most of them focused on one aspect—either communications or computing systems. However, salient features in communications and computing systems should be jointly considered, and novel holistic approaches across communications and computing systems are strongly required to implement energy-efficient systems. In addition, emerging systems, such as energy-harvesting IoT devices, cyber-physical systems (CPSs), autonomous vehicles (AVs), and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), require new approaches to satisfy their strict energy consumption requirements in mission-critical situations. The goal of this Special Issue is to disseminate the recent advances in energy-efficient communications and computing systems. Review and survey papers on these topics are welcome. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following: • energy-efficient communications: from physical layer to application layer; • energy-efficient computing systems; • energy-efficient network architecture: through SDN/NFV/network slicing; • energy-efficient system design; • energy-efficient Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial IoT (IIoT); • energy-efficient edge/fog/cloud computing; • new approaches for energy-efficient computing and communications (e.g., AI/ML and data-driven approaches); • new performance metrics on energy efficiency in emerging systems; • energy harvesting and simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT); • smart grid and vehicle-to-grid (V2G); and • standardization and open source activities for energy efficient systems.
