Difficile de dire ce qui rassemble le microprocesseur, l’homéopathie ou les nouveaux procédés exposés chaque année au concours Lépine. A minima, leur dénominateur commun est d’être associé au mot « innovation », à l’issue d’une réussite avérée ou, telle une incantation, pour la susciter. Innovation : le terme a aussi la particularité d’être employé à foison. Les vade mecum pour apprendre à innover, les récits sans anicroches de success story, ou les articles de presse qui affublent une idée, un produit, une méthode de ce noble titre ne se comptent plus. L’innovation est ainsi reliée à des représentations sociales la plupart du temps positives. Elle est même devenue un idéal à atteindre : il faut innover et être innovant ! Pour le sociologue, l’innovation c’est le cheminement sinueux, incertain, allant de la confection d’un objet jusqu’à sa diffusion massive, en passant par ses transformations ou ses déclinaisons, qui retiendra principalement l’attention : l’innovation est un processus que cet ouvrage décortique et explicite.

ÿOver de geschiedenis van de mens zijn al hele bibliotheken volgeschreven. Maar pas recent worden de belangrijke gebeurtenissen uit het verleden ook in verband gebracht met ecologische en klimatologische oorzaken. Het klimaat was doorheen de geschiedenis immers nooit stabiel, maar vertoonde een duidelijke golfbeweging. Het boek maakt het verband duidelijk tussen die klimaatveranderingen en o.a. het ontstaan van de landbouw, de ontwikkeling van steden en de wetenschappelijke en technologische innovaties die de menselijke beschaving tot vandaag hebben vormgegeven. De auteurs schetsen eerst de fysische en biologische context van het verhaal van de mensheid. Ze gaan dieper in op de evolutionaire biologie en onderstrepen de grote invloed van genetisch verankerde gedragskenmerken en de samenhang met culturele ontwikkelingen. Daarna neemt In het oog van de storm de lezer mee op een boeiende vogelvlucht doorheen de menselijke geschiedenis, bekeken door de klimaatbril. Daaruit trekken de auteurs levensbelangrijke lessen: in het licht van de dreigende opwarming van de aarde zal de mens al zijn creativiteit en leervermogen nodig hebben om onder het oog van de klimaatstorm uit te komen. In de maatschappelijke innovatie die zich onstuitbaar opdringt zijn gendergelijkheid, samenwerking en solidariteit de sleutelwoorden

"Innovez, innovez, innovez : telle est la formule magique qui sort sans cesse de la bouche des économistes et des politiques. Mais personne ne demande pourquoi cette frénésie permanente d'innovations technologiques, managériales, financières, publiques ou sociales et, surtout, dans quels buts ? L'injonction à innover toujours plus et plus vite est en réalité paradoxale : les innovations passées ont souvent contribué à aggraver les crises écologiques, géopolitiques, sociales et financières que nous connaissons aujourd'hui. Pour comprendre ce paradoxe, ce livre raconte comment s'est formée cette culture de l'innovation, fondée sur la croyance que celle-ci est la condition de progrès économiques, environnementaux ou sociaux, comment cette culture est associée à des valeurs positives telles que la créativité et la liberté d'entreprendre. Ce livre montre que cette vision enchantée est en réalité dangereuse : elle mésestime les faces sombres des innovations qui sont d'autant plus difficiles à repérer qu'elles se manifestent avec retard, au moment où elles sont diffusées à grande échelle. Comment innover autrement pour éviter ces effets indésirables et contribuer à une société plus soutenable ? With the exception of written letters and personal conversations, digital technology forms the basis of nearly every means of communication and information that we use today. It is also used to control the essential elements of economic, scientific, and public and private life: security, production, mobility, media, and healthcare. Without exaggerating it is possible to say that digital technology has become one of the foundations of our technologically oriented civilization. The benefits of modern data technology are so impressive and the potential for future applications so enormous that we cannot fail to promote its development if we are to retain our leading role in the competitive international marketplace. In this process, security plays a vital role in each of the areas of application of digital technology — the more technological sectors are entrusted to data systems technology, the more important their reliability becomes to us. Developing digital systems further while simultaneously ensuring that they always act and respond in the best interests of people is a central goal of the technological research and development propagated and conducted by Fraunhofer. The Editor Prof. Dr.-Ing. Reimund Neugebauer is the tenth president of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft. He took office on October 1, 2012 and is responsible for the board area of management policy and research.

This book explores the multiple challenges that the global technology shift is posing to the EU. It raises the question of how European societies will mobilize the positive effects of the rapid technological advancement in digitalization, robotization, and artificial intelligence, while mitigating the negative consequences in terms of job losses, cybercrime, and social and political polarization. From the vantage point of experts from economics, law, and political science, this book provides insights into the role that the EU is and ought to be playing in regulating global platform companies, addressing taxation in the digital economy, mitigating job displacements on the labour market, and tackling ethical concerns of artificial intelligence and the prospect of digital democracy.
