Abstract

Hypercalcemia is a relatively common disorder, which requires specific treatment in order to control symptoms and prevent the development of organ damage. Primary hyperparathyroidism and malignancy are responsible for most cases of hypercalcemia, and treatment has therefore been focused towards these two areas. The aim of this book is to present updated knowledge on hypercalcemia, its association with renal disorders, and benign and malignant diseases, diagnostic methodologies, as well as surgical and medical treatment. Insights into the etiology, pathogenesis and pathophysiology of hypercalcem

Abstract

The calcium is the main constituent of our skeleton. Furthermore, it plays an important role in a lot of physiological functions. The concentrations of calcium are strictly regulated by 3 hormones: vitamin D, parathyroid hormone and calcitonin.
Calcium deficiencies are relatively frequent in old people and can result from various factors. Osteoporosis is one of the consequences of this lack of calcium. This pathology increases when people get older.
In elderly patients, the most important complications, are fractures: hip, vertebral and wrist. It is the hip fractures that have serious consequences because they engender mostly hospitalization, loss of autonomy and sometimes death. Consequently, the preventive methods are welcome.
Different studies demonstrated the efficacy of calcium supplementation in the reduction of the risk of fracture.
The objective of this work is to show the interest to have a diet rich in calcium or to take calcium supplementation in prevention of osteoporotic fractures and to make old people aware of this pathology underestimated Le calcium est le constituant principal de notre squelette.
