Plantation forests are grown to supply wood and to provide environmental benefits, such as waste disposal, rehabilitation of degraded sites, enhancement of regional biodiversity and reduction of logging in native forests. In a highly readable fashion, this book describes the scientific principles which are used throughout the world to ensure rapid, healthy plantation growth. It is written for a world-wide audience, from forestry professionals and scientists through to small plantation growers, to describe how plantations may be grown responsibly and profitably.

Forests in Development: A Vital Balance, shows some of the main advances in forestry over the six years spanning between the XII World Forestry Congress in Canada and the XIII WFC held in Buenos Aires. The book covers most of the themes of the XIII WFC, from biodiversity through production, policies, environmental services, and economic aspects, linked by sustainability. It provides a comprehensive view of forestry today, conveying its different aspects through one solid piece addressed by authors whose work denotes a concept of sustainable forest management which is not so much a puzzle laboriously put together as a many-faced unity, steered to achieve ultimately a better quality of living for present and future generations.

Earlier, we edited a well received series on "Somatic embryogenesis in woody trees", volumes 1 to 6. These volumes provided readers extensive reviews on somatic embryogenesis of important angiosperm and gymnosperm tree species; an excellent source of information for newcomers or those already engaged in research. However, these book volumes did not cover stepwise "detailed protocols" for inducing somatic embryogenesis. This book contains 46 chapters, divided into 4 sections: A) 12 chapters on conifers, B) 14 chapters on fruits, C) 14 chapters on angiosperms, and D) 6 chapters on histology, bioencapsulation, protoplasts, cryopreservation, double staining and thin cell layer sectioning. The book provides stepwise protocols for somatic embryogenesis of a range of selected woody plants in order to assist researchers to initiate somatic embryogenic cultures without too much alterations in protocols. Each chapter provides information on initiation and maintenance of embryogenic cultures; somatic embryo development, maturation, and germination; acclimitization and field transfer of somatic seedlings. Some chapteres include applications of somatic embryogenesis cultures, e.g. protoplasts, encapsulation, cryopreservation, genetic transformation, genetic fidelity with molecular markers, and bioreactor.

This book is primarily a general text covering the whole sweep of the forest industries. The over-riding emphasis is on a clear, simple interpretation of the underlying science, demonstrating how such principles apply to processing operations. The book starts by considering the broad question "what is wood?" by looking at the biology, chemistry and physics of wood structure (first 4 chapters). This sets the scene. Next key chapters examine "wood quality" - explaining how and why wood quality can be so variable and implications for processing. Finally, in a series of chapters, various "industrial processes" are reviewed and interpreted. The 2nd Edition is a total revision. A few chapters remain relatively unchanged (no change for the sake of change). Many have been totally rewritten. All chapters have been written by specialists, but the presentation targets a generalist audience.

This book summarizing tree growth modelling theory and its application in Europe is unique in presenting for the first time a platform developed by leading tree growth modelling groups in Europe together with potential end users, represented by 15 European companies. That program promotes and implements a tree growth modelling theory necessary for managing uneven-aged and/or mixed species stands.

From the reviews of the 1st edition: "It will surely remain the most comprehensive work in this field for a long time to come. It belongs on the bookshelf of every material scientist and structural engineer." CAS Journal, USA "...[T]he author has done an admirable job, collecting, organizing, and reviewing the disparate literature on most aspects of the Acoustics of Wood." Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, USA
