Dieser Band lotet Gründe, Erscheinungsformen und Folgen von kollektiver und individueller Enttäuschung systematisch aus. Als analytische Kategorie integriert Enttäuschung Erfahrungen im Sinne von gedeuteter Vergangenheit sowie Zukunft in der Form von Erwartungen. Heuristisch öffnet Enttäuschung daher den Blick für die Vielfalt denkbarer und wünschenswerter Zukünfte. Die hier versammelten Beiträge unterstreichen dieses explorative Potenzial. Sie verdeutlichen, wie Erwartungen und die Schlussfolgerungen daraus kollektiv verhandelt wurden. Erwartungsmanagement zielte darauf ab, Enttäuschung zu vermeiden oder ihre Folgen zu minimieren. While disillusionment has been ascribed great historical significance, this sentiment has rarely been the subject of specific research. The volume explores the causes, manifestations, and consequences of collective and individual disillusionment. Covering the entire scope of the 20th century, they show the conflicted nature of expectations as the sources of later disappointments. However, disappointment never means the “end of history.”

Although the asymmetrical concepts have been well-known to scholars across the social sciences and humanities, their role in structuring the human world has never been an object of detailed research. 35 years ago Reinhart Koselleck sketched out the historical semantics of the oppositions »Hellenes«/»barbarians«, »Christians«/»pagans« and »Übermensch«/»Untermensch«, but his insights, though eagerly cited, have been rarely developed in a systematic fashion. This volume intends to remedy this situation by bringing together a small number of scholars at the crossroads of history, sociology, literary criticism, linguistics, political science and international studies in order to elaborate on Koselleck's notion of asymmetric counter-concepts and adapt it to current research needs.
