Abstract

This work aims to assess the economic benefit of using high strength steel (S460) and/or high performance concrete (C50/60) in composite steel-concrete columns. The use of high performance materials (HS materials) leads in particular to a reduction in the quantity of raw material, with equal loading. This implies the construction of a lighter structure or, while retaining the same section dimensions, structures with greater spans. The complexity of the economic interest assessment lies in the fact that many elements are involved, such as the steel profile, concrete, rebar, stirrups, labor, etc. Consequently, the variation in the quantity of raw material of concrete and steel, being the main factor of the presence or not of an economic benefit, does not fully explain the results. Two studies concerning the study of the economic benefit of high performance steel have already been carried out at the University of Liege: one concerning composite structures and the other concerning steel structures. These studies have in common the fact that they only considered HS steels. Consequently, the objective of this thesis is on the one hand, to integrate HS concrete in an economic study of this kind and on the other hand, to extend research for HS steels. Consequently, the designer can, on the basis of this work, determine if there is an economic benefit in using HS materials for a composite column or not, for a column length and a compression load known.

Abstract

Concrete is widely used because of its versatility, affordability, and availability of raw materials, strength, and durability. Urban development that took place through the world in the last few decades yielded significant developments for concrete technology. The term high-performance concrete (HPC) is relatively new, and it refers to many properties such as strength, durability, sound and heat insulation, waterproofing, and side advantages such as air purification, self-cleaning, etc. Researchers and engineers are constantly working for improving concrete properties. This book provides the state of the art on recent progress in the high-performance concrete applications written by researchers and experts of the field. The book should be useful to graduate students, researchers, and practicing engineers in related fields.

Abstract

This volume gathers the proceedings of the 3rd International RILEM Workshop on Concrete Durability and Service Life Planning (ConcreteLife’20), held in Haifa, Israel in January 2020. The papers cover a range of topics in concrete curing, cracking in concrete structures, corrosion of steel in concrete, thermal and hygral effects, concrete in cold climates and under high temperatures, recycling, alkali-silica reactions, chloride and sulfate attacks, marine structures, transport phenomena, durability design, microstructure of concrete and volume changes, and life cycle assessment. The book also explores future trends in research, development, and practical engineering applications related to durable concrete construction, and focuses on the design and construction of concrete structures exposed to various environmental conditions and mechanical loading. Given its scope, it offers a valuable asset for all researchers and graduate students in the areas of cement chemistry, cement production, and concrete design.

Abstract

The innovations in construction materials that have been made due to the development of different varieties of concrete have led to innovations in structural applications and design. This Special Issue mainly focuses on state-of-the-art research progress in high-performance concrete, including the effect and characteristics of fibers on the properties of high-performance concrete, the CO2 curing efficiency of high-performance cement composites, and the effect of nano materials when used in ultra-high-performance concrete. This Special Issue also contains two comprehensive review articles covering the following topics: the role of supplementary cementitious materials in ultra-high-performance concrete and recent progress in nanomaterials in cement-based materials. Readers working towards conducting research on innovative construction materials will be exposed to findings related to this topic in this Special Issue.
