Abstract

This dissertation by Mikael Chéramy investigates the effects and immunological mechanisms of aluminum-formulated Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase 65 (GAD-alum) treatment in Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) patients. The work focuses on clinical trials aimed at preserving β-cell function, particularly during Phase II and III trials. The study evaluates the immune response to GAD-alum treatment, including changes in GADA levels and IgG subclasses. Results indicate a Th2-associated immune response and elevated GADA levels, with prolonged effects observed in some patients. The research aims to enhance understanding of immune responses to autoantigens and identify biomarkers for optimizing future T1D interventions.
