Abstract

Urban violence has become a major threat in big cities of the world. Where the orthodox protection through the police and individual target hardening remain inefficient, the population must organize itself. This book contains first-hand accounts on a selection of the most innovative experiences in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Arab region and is of interest likewise for academics and urban practitioners, policy makers, international cooperation experts or travelers preparing a visit of one of the affected countries. With a preface by Caroline Moser. Reviewed in: www.friedensnews.at, 11.01.2015, Andreas Hermann Landl Environment & Urbanization, 2 (2015), Mara Evangelina Filippi Wissenschaft & Frieden, 1 (2015)

Abstract

Conversion disorder-a psychiatric term that names the enigmatic transformation of psychic energy into bodily manifestations-offers a way to rethink the present. With so many people suffering from unexplained bodily symptoms; with so many seeking recourse to pharmacological treatments or bodily modification; with young men and women seemingly willing to direct violence toward anybody, including themselves-a radical disordering in culture insists on the level of the body.Part memoir, part clinical case, part theoretical investigation, this book searches for the body. Is it a psychopathological entity; a crossroads for the cultural, political, and biological in the form of care; or the foundation of psychoanalytic work on the question of sexuality? Jamieson Webster traces conversion's shifting meanings-in religious, economic, and even chemical processes-revisiting the work of thinkers as diverse as Benjamin, Foucault, Agamben, and Lacan. She provides an intimate account of her own conversion from patient to psychoanalyst, as well as her continuing struggle to apprehend the complexities of the patient's body. When listening to dreams, symptoms, worries, or sexual impasses, the body becomes a defining trope that belies a vulnerable and urgent wish for transformation. Conversion Disorder names what is singular about the entanglement of the fractured body and the social world in order to imagine what kind of cure is possible.

Abstract

Abstract

Grid computing provides a mechanism for integrating, coordinating, and sharing heterogeneous computer resources.  This continually evolving field now aims to completely disaggregate current computer platforms and distribute them across a network as resources that can be called into action by any eligible user or machine at any time. This accessible and broad-ranging text/reference presents valuable research and results from many of the major projects involved in the emerging global grid infrastructure.  With a particular focus on the practical advantages and applications of grid computing – including real case studies – the book provides an in-depth study of grid technology for a wide range of different needs. Topics and features: Presents contributions from an international selection of experts in the field Provides summarizing abstracts and conclusions for each chapter Examines a remote instrumentation infrastructure, and a methodology to support e-science applications on e-infrastructures Describes the GEMS storage system, and pipeline workflows for optimizing end-to-end performance in wide-area networks Investigates semantic grid system architecture, social grid agents, and monitoring platforms designed for large-scale distributed systems Explores job control using service-level agreements Introduces the Composable Services Architecture for dynamic service provisioning, and the semantically driven communication middleware platform, Phoenix Discusses the PhyloGrid application, and a numerical simulation performed using grid computing The deep insights that can be gleaned from the text make it a highly useful tool for researchers and professionals alike.  Graduate students will also benefit from the extensive analysis on currently available grid systems.
