Abstract

"The New Crusades examines Islamophobia as a global phenomenon, detailing how the American War on Terror has facilitated and intensified the network of anti-Muslim campaigns unfolding across the world. At a juncture when both democratic and authoritarian regimes across the world are vested to persecuting their host Muslim populations, The New Crusades interrogates--through trenchant analysis and direct testimony of Muslims on the ground--how Islamophobia stands as a unifying global thread of both state and societal bigotry. Whether imposed by way of Hijab Bans in democratic France or the network of concentration camps in communist China, The New Crusades reveals--lucidly and luridly--that Islamophobia is not only a global phenomenon, but one of the world's last bastions of acceptable hate"--

Abstract

"The United States integrated counterterrorism mandates into its aid flows in the West Bank and Gaza Strip during the early years of the global war on terror. Some two decades later, this securitized model of aid has become normalized across donor intervention in Palestine. Elastic Empire traces how foreign aid, on which much of the Palestinian population is dependent, has multiplied the sites and means through which Palestinian life is regulated, surveilled, and policed--this book tells the story of how aid has also become war. Drawing on extensive research conducted in Palestine, Elastic Empire offers a novel accounting of the US security state. The US war chronicled here is not one of tanks, grenades, and guns, but a quieter one waged through the interlacing of aid and law. It emerges in the infrastructures of daily life--in a greenhouse and library, in the collection of personal information and mapping of land plots, in the halls of municipal councils and in local elections--and indelibly transfigures lives. Situated in a landscape where the lines between humanitarianism and the global war on terror are increasingly blurred, Elastic Empire reveals the shape-shifting nature of contemporary imperial formations, their realignments and reformulations, their haunted sites, and their obscured but intimate forms"--

Abstract

Two decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, why are the notable democracies of the US, India, and Israel building massive walls and fences on their borders? Despite predictions of a borderless world through globalization, these three countries alone have built security barriers totaling an astonishing 5,700 km. Border Walls analyzes how these controversial walls were justified, their impact on those living behind them, and the long-term effects of the hardening of political boundaries.

Abstract

From one of our most brilliant and original writers on U.S. foreign policy, a stunning and timely book on the policy of the Bush administration and its current grand strategy for the world. Mead begins by analyzing America's historical approach to the world& by no means perfect, but reasonably moral and reasonably practical on the whole. Then he examines the explosive foreign policy of the Bush administration and the uproar it has caused at home and abroad. Bush, according to Mead, is often strategically right but tactically at fault in his attempts to lead a divided nation& and a divided coalition of allies& in a dangerous struggle against ruthless enemies. We see how the mass terror attacks of 2001 have changed the political and strategic problems of American foreign policy. Despair and decay in the Arab world now present America and its allies with an extraordinarily difficult challenge. The accelerating collapse of civilized life in broad reaches of Africa& and the looming disasters of a similar kind in Central Asia& threatens to create lawless, violent zones where terrorism can thrive, and weapons of mass destruction and biological and chemical weapons can proliferate. We learn why key American alliances have frayed and why the Bush administration's pronouncements and actions have ignited the most acrimonious U.S. political battles over foreign policy since the Vietnam War. Mead closes with a rigorous assessment of both Bush and his critics, and describes the urgent steps the United States must take lest casualties in the war on terror mount and the war itself spin out of control. He proposes a new approach to the war that can rebuild domestic and international support for a tough antiterror policy, outlines a new initiative for the Israeli-Palestinian dispute, and recommends sweeping changes for reforming international institutions, including the United Nations Security Council. 'Power, Terror, Peace, and War 'is a clear, concise guide to some of the mo
