Abstract

Today a new generation of powerful cancer therapeutics targeted against the molecular pathways that produce malignant phenotypes is rapidly emerging. In Cancer Gene Therapy, leading basic and clinical cancer oncologists provide a complete introduction and guide to the latest developments in cancer gene therapy-from bench to bedside. In their discussions, the authors comprehensively review the anticancer genes and gene delivery methods currently available for cancer gene therapy, including the transfer of genetic material into the cancer cells, stimulation of the immune system to recognize and eliminate cancer cells, and the targeting of the nonmalignant stromal cells that support their growth. They also thoroughly examine the advantages and limitations of the different therapies and detail strategies to overcome obstacles to their clinical implementation. Topics of special interest include vector-targeting techniques, the lessons learned to date from clinical trials of cancer gene therapy, and the regulatory guidelines for future trials. Noninvasive techniques to monitor the extent of gene transfer and disease regression during the course of treatment are also discussed. Authoritative and wide ranging, Cancer Gene Therapy offers a comprehensive survey of the molecular basis of cancer gene therapy and demonstrates its enormous potential to take a place in the clinic alongside the current generation of anticancer therapeutics.

Abstract

This dictionary defines various terms typically used in pharmaceutical medicine. A new, 4th edition includes adaptations of the text to the steadily increasing regulatory requirements, particularly in the area of genetics/gene therapy, product quality (e.g., protection against falsified medicines) and of product safety (pharmacovigilance). Further evolving areas that are covered by the 4th edition are typical “grey zones” (health effects often borderline to medicinal products) such as cosmetics and dietary supplements where misleading information is prohibited on one hand but where any health claims need formal authorisation on the other. These but also other areas are reviewed and presented in an updated and – if justified – in an enlarged form.

Abstract

This comprehensive guide to polycystic kidney disease captures the growing knowledge of this common, potentially-fatal and hereditary disease. The first two sections of the book provide an overview of PKD gene structures, mutations and pathophysiologic mechanisms. This is followed by chapters focused on PKD’s clinical features, including renal and extrarenal manifestations, and appropriate management of patients. The final section covers current clinical trials and emerging therapies in PKD. Authored by experts in the field, this book provides the clinician and researcher with critical information on basic and translational science and clinical approaches in one concise resource.

Abstract

This book discusses the newest trends, concepts, and advancements in the management of vitreo-retinal conditions. The field of retina is rapidly changing, with new advances ranging from stem cell therapy, gene therapy and editing, new drug targets, novel delivery systems, and innovative technologies in advanced ocular imaging and surgical techniques. The goal is to provide a way to update practitioners and trainees on how the field of retina is changing. Areas of focus include new technologies, particularly in ocular imaging and vitreo-retinal surgery, major new clinical trials, particularly those that are shifting practice patterns or addressing novel therapies, and novel research that is altering the classification and diagnosis of retinal conditions, as well as management strategies and prognostic predictors for vitreo-retinal diseases. This volume is essential reading for generalist and specialist ophthalmologists and useful for residents and fellows training in various subspecialties.

Abstract

Medical literature for health care practitioners on the evaluation and treatment of breastfeeding issues has been disjointed, conflicting, and difficult to find. The field of breastfeeding medicine itself is nonexistent—there are no "breastfeeding doctors" who are specifically trained to understand this complex and interactive process. While much of the literature about breastfeeding describes how it "should" work, there is currently nothing available to explain why it often fails and how to treat it. Clinician’s Guide to Breastfeeding: Evidence-based Evaluation and Management is written for health care practitioners who work with breastfeeding mothers; physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and lactation consultants. It provides clear information and clinically tested strategies to help professionals guide new mothers to breastfeed successfully. The first of its kind to consider the entirety of the breastfeeding experience, Clinician’s Guide to Breastfeeding is written by Dr. Linda D. Dahl, a leading expert on the subject. It is a comprehensive review of breastfeeding, covering objective analyses of ideal or “normal” nursing, as well as the evaluation and treatment of abnormal nursing, including case studies to illustrate the treatment decision-making process.

Abstract

This book presents recent advances in translational research on muscular dystrophy (MD) to physicians and researchers, including cutting-edge research on the disease such as regenerative medicine, next-generation DNA sequencing, and nucleic acid therapies. It also describes the current systems for clinical trials and MD patient databases, resources, which will support the early realization of clinical application and improve patients’ quality of life.  MD is the one of the most widely known inherited neuromuscular diseases and is classified into diverse types by symptoms, age of onset, mode of inheritance, and clinical progression. With the development of molecular biology, the occurrence mechanisms of each type of MD are gradually being elucidated. Although there is no known permanent cure yet, the stage of treatment research has now advanced to clinical trials.
