Abstract

After briefly working as an architect, René Heyvaert (1929-1984) decided to pursue a career as an artist. He saw art as essential to his life; a way of dealing with the world. Heyvaert's artistic practice is very versatile; he has created drawings, photos, mail art and sculptures in the most diverse of materials, and has also published and took part in performances. But he is best known for his work with found objects that he reinterprets through minimal interpositions. By carrying out small, poetic interventions, Heyvaert took everyday objects out of their context and stripped them of their original function. This catalogue is published on the occasion of the exhibition of the oeuvre of René Heyvaert at Museum M Leuven in the winter of 2018 and exposes on his artistic as well as architectural practice, with interviews, essays and personal reflections.00Exhibition: Museum M, Leuven, Belgium (28.09.2018-10.02.2019).

Abstract

Abstract

Since 1979, Peter Fischli and David Weiss have been cheerfully celebrating the banality of everyday existence and, in the process, rising to the forefront of the contemporary international art world. Their work deliberately ignores the traditional distinction between high and low art, and employs a wide variety of media, including photography, film, video, artists books, installation, and sculpture.
Featuring over 200 color illustrations arranged in spreads designed by the artists, “Flowers & Questions” is the most thorough survey to date of one of the most fascinating and varied careers in contemporary art. The book includes contributions from a wide range of writers, critics, artists, and filmmakers, including leading art critic Arthur C. Danto, cult filmmaker John Waters, curator and writer Hans Ulrich Obrist, and artist Tacita Dean.

Abstract

"Adrian Piper has consistently produced groundbreaking work that has profoundly shaped the form and content of conceptual art since the 1960s. Strongly inflected by her longstanding involvement with philosophy and yoga, her pioneering investigations into the political, social, psychological and spiritual potential of conceptual art have had an incalculable influence on artists working today. Published in conjunction with the most comprehensive exhibition of her work to date, this catalog presents more than 280 artworks that encompass the full range of Piper's mediums: works on paper, video, multimedia installation, performance, painting, sound and photo-texts. Essays by curators and scholars examine her extensive research into altered states of consciousness; the introduction of the Mythic Being - her subversive masculine alter-ego; her media and installation works from after 1980, which reveal and challenge stereotypes of race and gender; and the global conditions that illuminate the significance of her art. Previously unpublished texts by the artist lay out significant events in her personal history and her deeply felt ideas about the relationship between viewer and art object. This publication expands our understanding of the conceptual and post-conceptual art movements and Piper's pivotal position among her peers and for later generations."--

Abstract

"The most thorough survey of the provocative British artist, sculptor, and photographer, Sarah Lucas, one of the most important living British artists. Sarah Lucas, having emerged in the UK in the late 1980s alongside artists including Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst, gained notoriety for her bawdy and irreverent sculptures. Often using found objects, Lucas provokes viewers with works that challenge our notions of gender, sexuality, and identity. Featuring eight essays and an interview with the artist, this volume reveals the breadth and complexity of Lucas's work in sculpture, photography, and installation over the past three decades." --
