The modular did not have to be invented: it can be found everywhere. We divide surfaces into grids, spaces into parts, and time into rhythmic units. Modular structures are also increasingly being recognized as a way of communicating, where the aim is not to construct a universal principle but to facilitate interplay between different systems. Building on the visionary design system that architect Fritz Haller and engineer Paul Scharer developed in 1965 for Swiss furniture company USM, 'Rethinking the modular' brings together specially commissioned essays and interviews with leading designers, architects and thinkers to present the wide-ranging importance and influence of modular design over the past fifty years. In revealing the broad possibilities created by balancing structure with flexibility, the timely publication redefines the place of modularity in modern design history, and offers a rich resource for designers today.

"The allure of mobile, portable architecture is worldwide and centuries old. From the desert tents of the Bedouin to the silvery capsules of the Airstream trailer, mobile architecture has inspired designers with its singular characteristics of lightness, transience, and practicality. In More Mobile, Jennifer Siegal explores the ever-growing range of possibilities of portable, demountable structures. From serious Refuge Wear to the playful Furnicycle and the practical Kunsthallen, More Mobile explores the methods and finished work of the most exciting contemporary designers working in this field and presents today's most dynamic, active mobile structures with beautiful color images, detailed drawings, and insightful texts."

As economic problems make some shy away from grandiose, long-lasting buildings, a wave of new temporary buildings and architecture is sweeping over the planet. These can have uses from emergency relief to concert or performance venues. Another fascinating area that is covered here is exhibition and fair design, a veritable treasure trove of exciting designs that come and go in the space of a week or less, to showcase fashion, jewelry, or design. Fashion shows or art displays are all part of this dynamic trend that includes some of the great names in contemporary architecture like Zaha Hadid or Rem Koolhaas, but also many architects that you have never heard of until now!Featured architects and practices include: Werner Aisslinger, Atelier Bow Wow, Aybar Mateos, Cecil Balmond, Shigeru Ban, Bernardes Jacobsen, BIG, Alberto Campo Baeza, Carmody Groarke, Santiago Cirugeda, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Ecosistema Urbano, Olafur Eliasson, Ammar Eloueini, Essentia, Established & Sons, Fantastic Norway, Mark Fisher, Massimiliano Fuksas, Laurent Grasso & Pascal Grasso, Zaha Hadid, Heatherwick, Institute of Computational Design, Toyo Ito, Adam Kalkin, Ken Min Architects, Koers Mulder, Adolf Krischanitz, Liu Jiakun, LOT-EK, MAPT, Miralles Tagliabue, MOS, Eric Owen Moss, NASA, Ivan Navarro, Jean Nouvel, OBRA Architects, OMA, OMD, John Pawson, Philippe Rahm, Raumlabor Berlin, Francesc Rifé, Michel Rojkind, Rotor, Tomás Saraceno, SO-IL, Tamassociati, Javier Terrados Cepeda, UNStudio, Helena Willemeit, Tokujin Yoshioka

Since the earliest people lived as nomads, their buildings were portable, constructed in a way that allowed them to be rebuilt as they moved to new locations for better living conditions as the seasons changed. This book discusses the forerunners, present context, and technology of portable architecture. It documents numerous international examples, organized by areas of application, and offers a broad array of suggestions for practical design. In the Arts and Culture section, Shigeru Ban’s Nomadic Museum, made of shipping containers in the USA and Japan is examined, as is Mark Fisher’s event architecture for concert tours by the Rolling Stones and U2. Suggestions for flexible living include Richard Horden’s micro compact home and the Container Home Kit from LOT/EK. The design of mobile structures used in extreme situations, such as the Antarctic or in the aftermath of natural catastrophes, is explored. Exhibition and entertainment facilities are other typical areas of application for light, mobile structures. Demountable, temporary structures allow for exciting architectural experimentation which can then be prototyped for regular use.

There never was a time when there was not motion, and never will be a time when there will not be motion. Aristotle Mobility is a challenge that architecture has always had to confront; Aristotle was merely the first to philosophize about it. In the present age of digital nomadism, the art of building, with its traditional focus on immobility in fixed places, finds itself confronted by the temptation to relinquish its characteristic rootedness and to abandon itself to the irresistible pull of mobility. In countless manifestos, avant-garde architects describe how they intend to dissolve buildings and indeed whole cities, create an architecture based on a machine aesthetic that prominently involves mobility, and give their buildings legs or wheels.Notwithstanding the many prophets of doom that see solid, sedentary architecture sacrificed to mobile lifestyles, architects continue to take up the challenge and design portable houses. The results are often both practical and innovative, as is demonstrated on the more than 800 pages of this new title in the Construction and Design Manual series, in which 43 international design teams present works ranging from architectural follies to handicapped accessible furnishings and life-saving shelters.
