Abstract

"This book describes the rich and diverse realm of accreting binary systems, made up of a compact object such as a white dwarf, neutron star or black hole, orbiting a companion star. It details the nature, formation and evolution of accreting binaries, describing how extensive observations, accompanied by simulations, allow astronomers to better understand the energetic phenomena occurring in these intriguing systems. The book also describes how multi-messenger astronomy is currently revolutionizing our view of these systems, adding gravitational waves, neutrinos and cosmic rays to the photon light we receive from them. Aimed at graduate students and researchers, this book provides an introduction to the topic, first describing the astrophysical basics of both single and binary stars, before moving on to detail the different types of accreting binary systems such as cataclysmic variables (CVs), low-and high-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs/HMXBs), and peculiar binaries such as intermediate-mass X-ray binaries (IMXBs) and ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), finishing up with a panorama of multimessenger research.

Abstract

The direct detection of gravitational waves in 2015 has initiated a new era of gravitational wave astronomy, which has already paid remarkable dividends in our understanding of astrophysics and gravitational physics. Aimed at advanced undergraduates and graduate students, this book introduces gravitational waves and its many applications to cosmology, nuclear physics, astrophysics and theoretical physics.

Abstract

The first non-electromagnetic messengers from space were discovered in the early 20th century, but it is only now that multimessenger astronomy is coming into its own. The aim of Multimessenger Astronomy in Practice is to aid an astronomer who is new to research in a particular area of multimessenger astronomy. Covering electromatic radiation from radio through to gamma-rays, and moving on to neutrino, cosmic-ray and gravitational wave astronomy, it gives the reader an overview of the celestial objects detected in each region, the unique methods used to measure them, as well as the principles and methods of data collection, calibration, reduction and analysis.

Abstract

Astronomy has traditionally relied on capturing photons from cosmic sources to be able to understand the universe. During the 20th and 21st centuries, different messengers have been added to the astronomer's toolset: cosmic rays, neutrinos, and most recently gravitational waves. Each of these messengers opens a new window on the universe, and a modern astronomer must be familiar with them. The goal of this book is to provide a broad understanding of these messengers and their relationship to each other. The unique physics of each messenger is introduced, as well as the physics of their detection and interpretation. An additional focus is the discussion of techniques and topics that are common to more than one messenger. Principles of Multimessenger Astronomy is designed to be both an introduction and reference to modern astronomy.

Abstract

This book consists of the articles published in the special issues of this Symmetry journal based on two-by-two matrices and harmonic oscillators. The book also contains additional articles published by the guest editor in this Symmetry journal. They are of course based on harmonic oscillators and/or two-by-two matrices. The subject of symmetry is based on exactly soluble problems in physics, and the physical theory is not soluble unless it is based on oscillators and/or two-by-two matrices. The authors of those two special issues were aware of this environment when they submitted their articles. This book could therefore serve as an example to illustrate this important aspect of symmetry problems in physics.
