Italy's officially joining the China-led Belt and Road Initiative sparked a fierce debate. By analysing five fields of cooperation, the volume sheds light on whether the bilateral agreement has brought about an intensification of bilateral collaboration as wished by the Italian government at the time and whether the concerns around it have materialised. The contributions will show that potential risks coexist alongside unsubstantiated ones.

China's New Silk Road initiative constitutes one of the most ambitious projects in recent decades designed to change the pattern of the global economic division of labour as well as the geostrategic balance of power. It has the potential to create a new fabric of industrial value creation that links China and East Asia via Central and South Asia with Europe, and to forge new regional and multilateral institutions that complement or compete with existing regional and global governance systems. First proposed in 2013, the new initiative is only now starting to be rolled-out, with trade relations gradually intensifying, and the first investment projects and infrastructure clusters becoming manifest. However, the full impact of the evolving new regional value chains on global goods flows, investment activity, supra-national institution building, as well as their wider international implications, remains undetermined. This book brings together leading scholars from economics, political science and area studies, who present the latest cutting-edge knowledge and the latest state-of-the-art economic and political analysis on how the new initiative is developing and likely to develop.

Relations between the Russian Federation (RF) and Ukraine are determined primarily by the interstate armed conflict in Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Attempts by Russia to illegally annex the territory of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol in 2014 and their occupation, the armed confrontation in the Donbass determine the long-term nature of the interstate confrontation. / This conflict is asymmetric. For Ukraine, the consequences of the confrontation with Russia are vital, and the course of the conflict affects almost all important social processes. Instead, the Russian leadership views Ukraine primarily as a field of competition with the West in order to "declare the position of the Russian Federation as one of the influential centers of the modern world." / The post-Soviet space is a priority of Russia's foreign policy, simultaneously more importance is attached to cooperation with the states participating in Russia's integration projects. / The Strategy of Economic Security of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2030, adopted in 2017, identifies the creation of conditions for the implementation of strategic national priorities of the Russian Federation 3 as a priority for the development of the Russian economy. Thus, the subordination of the economy to the implementation of primarily strategic goals set by the political leadership is stated.
