The aim of this work is to standardise a method for measuring the gas production of feedstuffs fermented in syringes. This technique could be used in tropical routine conditions to determine the fermentescibility of feedstuffs and to predict the intake, the digestibility and the energy value of forages. The results show that the gas production in syringues depends on the nature of the diet, the sampling time of the rumen fluid, the composition of the buffer and its proportion compared to the rumen fluid, as well as the amount of the incubated substrate. Gas production is optimised when 250 mg dry matter of substrate are incubated with rumen fluid from bovine or ovine sampled pre-feeding and the Menke buffer in the ratio of 10/20 in volume. Ovine faeces can serve as alternative to the rumen fluid when used for feeds with similar lignocellulosic contents. Gas production kinetics of feeds are different for glass or plastic syringes. The length of incubation and the measurement frequency of gas production also affect the estimation of the France model parameters and, consequently, the potentially degraded organic matter in the rumen. The ingestibility of Andropogon gayanus in sheep seems to be well predicted from its crude protein content and its fractional rate of gas production in syringes.
