Abstract

This dissertation by Hans Bahlmann explores the efficacy of goal-directed fluid therapy (GDFT) during major abdominal surgery. It examines the use of pleth variability index (PVI) and oesophageal Doppler as methods to optimize fluid administration based on hemodynamic parameters. The study involves randomized trials with patients undergoing high-risk surgeries, such as oesophageal resection, to determine the clinical benefits of GDFT. The research addresses the challenges of preoperative dehydration and evaluates the impact of different measurement devices on patient outcomes. The findings suggest that while GDFT methods are comparable in fluid administration, the overall clinical benefits remain uncertain, raising questions about the strict application of GDFT strategies. The work is intended for medical professionals and researchers in the field of anesthesiology and surgical care.

Abstract

Fully updated and expanded, the second edition of Clinical Fluid Therapy in the Perioperative Setting brings together the world's leading experts in fluid management to explain what you should know when providing infusion fluids to surgical and critical care patients. Current evidence-based knowledge, essential basic science, and modern clinical practice are explained in 34 focused and authoritative chapters. New chapters cover topics such as burn injury, monitoring of the microcirculation, the glycocalyx layer, intensive care, trauma, transplantations, and adverse effects of infusion fluids. Each chapter begins with an abstract, providing a quick overview of the topic, followed by detailed clinical and pre-clinical guidance. Together, the chapters guide the reader in the use of fluid therapy in all aspects of perioperative patient care. Edited by Robert G. Hahn, a clinical anesthesiologist and highly experienced researcher in fluid therapy, this is essential reading for all anesthesiologists, intensivists, and surgeons.

Abstract

"Clinical Fluid Therapy in the Peri-Operative Setting brings together some of the world's leading clinical experts in fluid management to explain what you should know when providing infusion fluids to surgical and critical care patients. Current evidence-based knowledge, essential basic science and modern clinical practice are explained in 25 focused and authoritative chapters. Each chapter guides the reader in the use of fluid therapy in all aspects of peri-operative patient care. Guidance is given on the correct selection, quantity and composition of fluids required as a consequence of the underlying pathology and state of hydration of the patient, and the type and duration of surgery. Edited by Robert G. Hahn, a highly experienced clinician and award-winning researcher in fluid therapy, this is essential reading for all anaesthetists, intensivists and surgeons"--Provided by publisher.
