Global aquaculture production has grown rapidly over the last 50 years. It is generally accepted that there is limited potential to increase traditional fisheries since most fish stocks are well or fully exploited. Consequently increased aquaculture production is required in order to maintain global per capita fish consumption at the present level. Fish farming enables greater control of product quality and safety, and presents the possibility of tailoring products according to consumer demands. This important collection reviews safety and quality issues in farmed fish and presents methods to

In consideration of the ever-increasing global population, the demand for food—and on food-production—is massive. It is critical that we are able to meet this demand and mitigate the risks and factors that challenge our ability to do so, including pestilence to food crops and biological threats to food safety, before food reaches the consumer. As such, the advancement of measures to both protect crops and facilitate the surety of safe food products to end-users is a research area of great interest and growing development. This book details exciting new research into the use of natural compounds for the protection of crops and food products. From essential oils and their potential uses as naturally derived antimicrobial agents to the use of carbon dioxide as a pesticide and the use of biofertilisers, the articles herein describe and review cutting edge research in this area to help facilitate a more sustainable future.

This book includes recent research activities in the field of food quality assurance and shelf-life extension. The goal is to broaden our current knowledge of advanced approaches to guaranteeing the maintenance of the properties of packaged products during storage. Preservation strategies based on vacuum packaging, innovative active packaging, emerging technologies, and horticultural by-products are widely discussed in specific chapters. Taken together, these research studies constitute clear evidence that achieving food shelf-life extension is still a complex and multifaceted process. The book reflects advances made in the field and, with the addition of a chapter also covering the secondary shelf-life topic, it will provide the latest research for academics working in the field of novel processing, antimicrobial/antioxidant substances, by-product recycling and active packaging. The research collected in this book is ideal for those working in the food quality industry.
