Abstract

In 2006 Communities and Local Government (CLG) Sustainable Buildings Division commissioned BRE to carry out a three year project titled Fire Spread in Car Parks. The existing guidance for fire safety in car parks in England and Wales is in Approved Document B (Fire safety) to the Building Regulations in England and Wales (AD B). The basis for this guidance for fire safety strategies in car parks relates to fire initiation and fire growth involving cars whose designs are decades old. There has been increasing concern about the consequences of fires in car parks associated with modern car design (e.g. plastic fuel tanks) and how these fires may spread to other vehicles parked adjacently and nearby. This concern has been heightened by the entry into the market place of cars powered by alternative fuels such as LPG. Fires in car parks are rare, and, although there have been few deaths or injuries recorded to date in the UK, there are concerns regarding new and emerging risks from modern cars and alternative fuels. There was a need to gather up-to-date information on fires involving cars in car parks in order that the current fire safety guidance could be reviewed and, if necessary, updated. The overall aim of the project has therefore been to gather information on the nature of fires involving the current design of cars and to use this new knowledge as a basis, if necessary, for updating current guidance in AD B (and possibly other Approved Documents) on fire safety strategies for car parks. This report describes the project, the findings and conclusions.

Abstract

"This book helps adults to understand firesetting behaviour in children and teens and provides strategies to work with them to address the behaviour. Drawing upon the latest juvenile firesetting research and utilising child development theory to underpin its safety messages, the book explores why young people might set fires in the first place and contextualises firesetting in terms of communication and gaining the attention of carers and other adults. The chapters lay out practical, tried-and-tested steps that professionals and carers can take to address firesetting behaviour, and suggests how to further support any child or teen who sets fires. This includes summaries of the latest evidence-based support strategies and a range of creative activities that can be used in direct work with children and teenagers who set fires, tailored to specific age ranges. Combining expert advice on firesetting behaviour with straightforward practices, this comprehensive book can be used by anyone working with young people to help them intervene and prevent it"--

Abstract

Rural and urban residents accustomed to seeing fire engines racing with sirens wailing and lights flashing are unaware of the problem of juvenile-set fires. Firesetting behaviors among children and adolescents are serious and have associated with it, serious individual and societal costs. Every year, several thousand children and adolescents aged 14 years and younger in the United States alone are injured or killed. Firesetting, pyromania and arson are topics that have existed in the literature since Sigmund Freud explained firesetting through his psychoanalytic model. Helen Yarnell's studies
