This book is aimed at helping media and film studies teachers introduce the basics of feminist film theory. No prior knowledge of feminist theory is required, the intended readers being university undergraduate teachers and students of film and media studies. Areas of emphasis include spectatorship, narrative, and ideology. Many illustrative case studies from popular cinema are used to offer students an opportunity to consider the connotations of visual and aural elements of film, narrative conflicts and oppositions, the implications of spectator “positioning” and viewer identification, and an ideological critical approach to film. Explanations of key terminology are included, along with classroom exercises and practice questions. Each chapter begins with key definitions and explanations of the concepts to be studied, including some historical background where relevant. Case studies include film noir, Kathryn Bigelow’s Strange Days and the work of directors Spike Lee, Claire Denis, and Paul Verhoeven.

This doctoral thesis by Wibke Straube explores the representation of transgender individuals in contemporary film, specifically focusing on the concept of 'Trans Cinema'. The study investigates the potential for utopian and hopeful narratives within films like 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch', 'Transamerica', and 'Laurence Anyways'. By analyzing scenes of singing, dancing, and dreaming, the thesis highlights alternative ways of engaging with trans identities beyond narratives of humiliation and violence. It employs a transfeminist perspective and draws on feminist and cultural theories to propose new conceptual tools such as 'exit scapes' and 'sensible cinematic'. This work contributes to transgender studies and visual culture, offering insights into the cinematic portrayal of gender dissidence.

Since the turn of the millennium, a growing number of female filmmakers have appropriated the aesthetics of horror for their films. In this book, Patricia Pisters investigates contemporary women directors such as Ngozi Onwurah, Claire Denis, Lucile Hadz̈ihalilović and Ana Lily Amirpour, who put 'a poetics of horror' to new use in their work, expanding the range of gendered and racialised perspectives in the horror genre. Exploring themes such as rage, trauma, sexuality, family ties and politics, 'New Blood in Contemporary Cinema' takes on avenging women, bloody vampires, lustful witches, scary mothers, terrifying offspring and female Frankensteins. By following a red trail of blood, the book illuminates a new generation of women directors who have enlarged the general scope and stretched the emotional spectrum of the genre.
