"This volume includes an unpublished manuscript and selected portions of five seminars by Harold Garfinkel - the founder of ethnomethodology - on the topic of practices in the natural sciences and mathematics. The volume provides a coherent and sustained account of his program for the study of ordinary and specialized social actions. Les recherches de Harold Garfinkel visent à considérer l'ordre et l'intelligibilité du monde social comme sensibles et concrets, et à rapporter leur production et leur maintien à des opérations, réglées normativement. Elles sont orientées, dans les années 50 et 60, sur la façon dont les agents sociaux raisonnent, jugent et décident en situation, ou coordonnent leurs actions lorsqu'ils ont à gérer les affaires de la vie courante, sur la manière dont ils font sens de ce qui leur arrive, se comprennent mutuellement, accèdent à la connaissance des structures du monde social et l'utilisent. Cette production et ce maintien sont étayés sur une « connaissance de sens commun » des structures sociales, de l'« attitude de la vie quotidienne », ainsi que sur une maîtrise pratique des méthodes et procédés d'organisation des activités ordinaires. Ces activités manifestent un caractère standardisé, régulier, anonyme, reproductible, transcendant leurs auteurs et leurs circonstances, qui rend leur reconnaissance possible. Ces recherches fondatrices ont été inspirées par la phénoménologie sociale d'Alfred Schütz et par la confrontation avec l'oeuvre de Talcott Parsons. ll s'agit de rendre aux faits sociaux de Durkheim leur physionomie concrète de "choses organisationnelles", de retrouver le travail vivant et méthodique d'organisation dynamique, d'ordonnancement et de mise en sens qui constitue ces faits comme réalité objective.
