The Swiss artist Miriam Cahn (*1949, Basel) deals with political and social themes in oil paintings; charcoal, chalk, and colored and lead pencil drawings; and in photographs, films, and installations. Strong color is characteristic of her work, forming a stark contrast to the recurring motifs of violence, tenderness, war, destruction, and physical infirmity. Her habit of commenting upon her work in writing is a golden thread running throughout Cahn's career. She illuminates her own art, commenting in the process on art and world events, and she sets up the texts opposite her artworks in exhibitions and publications. "Writing in rage" is the first compilation of her writing by itself, and includes essays, journal entries, and correspondence with friends, foes, family members, and gallerists. The book provides very personal insights into Cahn's life, her family, and the art market, introducing the reader to a disputatious, independent spirit. --Publisher's website.

A tribute to Abbie Hoffmann's pamphlet of the same name, Steal this Book documents eleven recent performative projects by Spanish artist Dora García. Edited by Franc̜ois Piron, the book presents the private correspondence of the artist with the various interpreters of the situations she sets up in the public space. It proposes a documentation of a body of work without an overview, nor an official line, since it takes neither the artist point of view nor the critic's. Instead, it discloses questions, misunderstandings and arguments, making this book part suspense story, part user's manual, part script for a stand-up comedy. Steal this Book is presented in exhibitions as a Dora García sculpture meant to be stolen, but can also be found in selected bookstores worldwide.

"Words speak volumes, but, as every letter writer knows, there are times when they simply won't do. And when the author happens to be a visual artist, he has an added advantage - one that transforms ordinary stationery into a canvas. This book chronicles those occasions when words were not enough, and some of America's most revered artists turned their talents to illustrating their most intimate thoughts and feelings." "Writing to wives, lovers, friends, patrons, clients, premiere artists such as Frederick Edwin Church, Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth, Rockwell Kent, Lyonel Feininger, John Sloan, Alfred Frueh, Man Ray, Alexander Calder, Dorothea Tanning, Gio Ponti, Andy Warhol, and Frida Kahlo picture the world around them in charming vignettes, caricatures, portraits, and landscapes. Together, the words and images of these autobiographical works of art, created for private consumption, reveal the joys and successes, loves and longings, triumphs and frustrations of their authors' personal lives and professional careers."--Jacket.

Avec Barbara Morgan, Loïe Fuller, Martha Graham, Josephine Baker, Isadora Duncan, Vera Fokina and Anna Pavlova.
