Abstract

With the growth of urbanization, industrialization, and intensive agricultural practices, all superficial, inland, and marine water bodies have become the repository for large quantities of every type of substance extraneous to the natural aquatic environment. The knowledge of hydrodynamics becomes crucial in this context, as it is the driving mechanism for the movement and transport of these matters and of sediments that become collectors of these substances, in a surface water system. The best way to understand these natural processes is via examples and case studies. This book deals with practical studies of hydrodynamic processes through physical and numerical models. Researchers, together with practicing engineers, will find this book useful in making a rapid assessment of different environmental water body problems.

Abstract

This paper surveys the recent literature exploring the causes of urban pollution in the developing world and the implications of such pollution for a city's competitiveness. Within a system of cities, cities compete for jobs and people. Those cities that specialize in heavy industrial activity will gain from a manufacturing boom but are more likely to be polluted than a city that specializes in the service economy and one that makes investments in regulations to reduce the social costs of power generation, transportation, and household services. The paper explores three main questions. First, why does pollution inhibit urban competitiveness? Second, why is this effect likely to grow in importance over time? Third, why have cities been slow to adopt cost-effective regulatory strategies?

Abstract

Thirty years of economic renovation reforms have catapulted Vietnam from the ranks of the world's poorest countries to one of its great development success stories. Critical ingredients have been visionary leaders, a sense of shared societal purpose, and a focus on the future. Starting in the late 1980s, these elements were successfully fused with the embrace of markets and the global economy. Economic growth since then has been rapid, stable, and inclusive, translating into strong welfare gains for the vast majority of the population. But three decades of success from reforms raises expectations for the future, as aptly captured in the Vietnamese constitution, which sets the goal of 'a prosperous people and a strong, democratic, equitable, and civilized country.' There is a firm aspiration that by 2035, Vietnam will be a modern and industrialized nation moving toward becoming a prosperous, creative, equitable, and democratic society. The Vietnam 2035 report, a joint undertaking of the Government of Vietnam and the World Bank Group, seeks to better comprehend the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. It shows that the country's aspirations and the supporting policy and institutional agenda stand on three pillars: balancing economic prosperity with environmental sustainability; promoting equity and social inclusion to develop a harmonious middle- class society; and enhancing the capacity and accountability of the state to establish a rule of law state and a democratic society. Vietnam 2035 further argues that the rapid growth needed to achieve the bold aspirations will be sustained only if it stands on faster productivity growth and reflects the costs of environmental degradation. Productivity growth, in turn, will benefit from measures to enhance the competitiveness of domestic enterprises, scale up the benefits of urban agglomeration, and build national technological and innovative capacity. Maintaining the record on equity and social inclusion will require lifting marginalized groups and delivering services to an aging and urbanizing middle-class society. And to fulfill the country's aspirations, the institutions of governance will need to become modern, transparent, and fully rooted in the rule of law.

Abstract

This thesis explores the ideal characteristics of a degrowth-oriented enterprise, with a particular focus on the social enterprise model. The broader context of this study is a growing awareness of the limitations inherent in a growth-centered economic model, which has increasingly led to environmental and social crises. The research begins with a literature review that traces the historical evolution of the concept of economic growth and highlights the environmental and social challenges posed by this model. Degrowth, defined as a deliberate reduction in production and consumption, is proposed as a viable alternative that emphasizes environmental sustainability, social equity, and well-being over the continuous expansion of GDP. The primary objective of this thesis is to identify and evaluate the characteristics of an enterprise that could thrive in a degrowth context. The study focuses on social enterprises, which are considered a potentially relevant business model for degrowth. Through empirical analysis, including interviews with experts in the fields of degrowth and/or the social economy, the thesis examines the relevance of the social enterprise model in relation to the ideal characteristics of a degrowth-oriented enterprise and the core aspects of degrowth. This research aims to contribute to the understanding of the dynamics between degrowth and business models by providing insights into how companies, particularly social enterprises, can be organized to align with sustainability and economic transition goals.

Abstract

Problems of responsibility for the preservation of the environment and the protection of nature lead to questions of wholesomeness for people. In addition to the disciplinary approaches of the experts, a practical "mixed solution" is to be striven for, which safeguards nature conservation and "humane" living conditions that are beneficial for people, also for future generations. In terms of a pragmatic design, environmental compatibility and human friendliness should determine our future responsibilities.

Abstract

The rapid urbanization that began with industrialization has begun to cause many problems. New approaches are emerging today to minimize these problems and make urban areas more livable. These problems include insufficient social facilities in urban areas for increasing populations due to migration and unbalanced use of green areas, water, and energy resources due to urbanization. Careless consumption and the pollution of natural resources will cause people many more problems in the future than they do today in urban development. Many professional disciplines have noticed this unbalanced development in urban areas. Urban areas have larger populations than rural areas today. Urban areas are developed neglectfully. Sustainability is needed as a criterion for urban areas to develop in a more livable and healthy fashion. Sustainable urban development approaches are seen in many fields, ranging from land use to the use of natural resources in urban areas.
