Abstract

Nowadays, the development of magnetic data storage devices technique faces fundamental limitations which lead to a slow-down of the increase of areal storage density. Therefore, magnetoelectric coupling which allows to change the magnetic state of matter by means of an electric field attracted significant interest. In this work, scanning tunneling microscopy was used to show for the first time that magnetic information can be written on the nanometer scale by the application of electric fields.

Abstract

"Valleytronics in 2D Materials is the first book in the world on the topic of valleytronics. The reader is introduced to the concept via a brief history emphasizing the challenges that impeded its development for so long. We then dive into the valley physics of 2D semiconductors to explain the recent excitement in 2D valleytronics, the scientific investigations to confirm the addressable valleys, and the attempts to engineer valley devices for practical purposes. The text takes on a decidedly practical approach towards the subject, seeking to bring the reader quickly into the field by presenting the minimum theoretical basis for understanding the use of the valley degree of freedom in devices. A selection of key works establishing the scientific underpinnings of valley addressability and control are described to help the reader grasp the current stage of understanding, the technical foundations established, and the open questions. The renewal in valleytronics is yet unfinished, but with more than a decade of research and engineering efforts devoted in recent times, this book seeks to provide a timely reference for students, scientists and engineers to join this exciting journey and perhaps help to create the next disruption in information technology"--

Abstract

This book entitled “Protein Crystallization under the Presence of an Electric Field” covers recent trends and original contributions on the use of electric fields (internal and external) for applications for nucleation control and the effect on the kinetics of crystallization processes. This book also includes basic strategies for growing crystals of biological macromolecules for characterization via X-ray and neutron diffraction as well as using modern X-ray-free electron-lasers. There are six main topics covered on this book, including recent insights into the crystallization process from nucleation and growth peculiarities, when using different kinds of electric fields; the effect of external electric fields on the kinetics of the dislocation-free growth of model proteins; the use of very strong external electric fields for the crystallization of a model protein glucose isomerase; and the use of alternant electric fields using different kinds of pulses and their combination with strong magnetic fields. There are also contributions related to applications in developing electron-transfer devices as well as graphene-based platforms for electrocrystallization and in situ X-ray diffraction characterization.

Abstract

Carotenoids are uniquely functional polyene pigments that are ubiquitous in nature; aside from being responsible for the color of a wide variety of vegetables, interest has been focused on food carotenoids due to their likely health benefits. This Special Issue, “Carotenoids in Fresh and Processed Food: Between Biosynthesis and Degradation”, consists of five peer-reviewed papers that cover a numerous new insights on the chemistry of carotenoids together with some observations related to their protection from photodegradation. Moreover, other considerations about their biosynthesis and influencing parameters in fresh food are included.
