Devenue un fait de société par le nombre de personnes qu'elle touche et par les débats que ses développements suscitent, la Procréation Médicalement Assistée repose d'abord et avant tout sur des réalités biomédicales. Loin du forum bioéthique, la fivete, ses corollaires et dérivés, ont comme unique objectif de permettre à des couples stériles de connaître les joies de la conception alors que les réalités anatomiques, endocriniennes ou autres le leur interdisent spontanément. Rédigée par un biologiste, la fertitité contrariée ne se contente pas de faire un inventaire des recettes ni des traitements médicaux réparateurs. Elle rappelle d'abord les réalités génétiques, biochimiques et physiologiques qui autorisent la conception. Elle aborde ensuite avec méthode les alternatives thérapeutiques qui permettent d'espérer une conception lorsqu'un ou plusieurs paramètrres, chez l'homme, la femme ou les deux, pêchent par défaut ou par excès. De la mise au point clinique à la fivete, l'auteur aborde les différentes ressources thérapeutiques offertes aujourd'hui par les PMA en en détaillant le " pourquoi " et le " comment ", les avantages mais aussi les limites. Sans concession et avec le recul pondéré dû à plus de dix ans de pratique quotidienne. Le texte est assorti d'un lexique qui offre une définition à près de 300 mots et acronymes liés aux PMA et à la reproduction en général. L'ouvrage apparaît donc comme un recours nécessaire sinon indispensable pour toute personne concernée par cette problématique, que ce soit à titre personnel ou professionnel.

Based on the author's fieldwork at assisted conception clinics in England in the mid-1990s, this is the first ethnographic study of the new procreative practices of anonymous ova and embryo donation. Giving voice to both groups of women participating in the demanding donation experience – the donors on the one side and the ever-hopeful IVF recipients on the other – Konrad shows how one dimension of the new reproductive technologies involves an unfamiliar relatedness between nameless and untraceable procreative strangers. Offsetting informants’ local narratives against traditional Western folk models of the ‘sexed’ reproductive body, the book challenges some of the basic assumptions underlying conventional biomedical discourse of altruistic donation that clinicians and others promote as “gifts of life.” It brings together a wide variety of literatures from social anthropology, social theory, cultural studies of science and technology, and feminist bioethics to discuss the relationship between recent developments in biotechnology and changing conceptions of personal origins, genealogy, kinship, biological ownership and notions of bodily integrity.
