RFID is a key technology for Europe. Today we are witnessing a noticeable shift away from RFID pilot projects of the early days, towards a broad deployment of RFID in order to increase efficiency and innovation of processes. Even though Europe is a leading player in the world of RFID technology, several challenges need to be addressed in order for RFID to reach its full potential. To further the advancement of this technology, coordinated European efforts need to be promoted, especially in the areas of standardisation, user guidelines, legislation, technology development, and research and development. These themes have been analysed by a network of European RFID technology providers, vendors and end users. The result of their work is summarised in this volume, giving recommendations for RFID stakeholders who wish to support the technology. By providing a comprehensive overview of state of play of RFID in Europe, this book is an indispensable read for decision makers in all areas of society who have to look into RFID. The publication is a summary of the results of the coordination action CE RFID - Coordinating European Efforts in the RFID Value Chain - a network of European RFID technology providers, vendors and end users. It aims at promoting the use of RFID technology and supporting further development. The project was funded by the European Commission under the 6th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development.

The consumer demand functions that drive traditional retail sales are the well-defined functions of price and product attributes (e.g., quality, style trends, etc.). However, these new sophisticated selling techniques examples are mixed sales channels, portals, group buying, and auctions, each of which is enabled by information technologies, the Internet, or both are changing and expanding consumer-driven demand in many ways. The underlying pattern of demand created by these evolving mechanisms will be a marked departure from traditional factors driving consumer demand. To analyze and understand rational and strategic consumer demand, the editors have divided the book into five discrete sections that first consider rational consumer behavior and the endogenous decision making mechanisms behind it. They then present sections on organizational strategies, product strategies, operational strategies, and, finally, pricing strategies for managing rational/strategic consumer behavior. Together, this handbook provides the state-of-the-art OM models that will help the reader to understand and effectively respond to increasingly rational purchasing behavior. CONSUMER-DRIVEN DEMAND AND OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT MODELS has been developed by two of the leading researchers in the POM/Marketing interface. It is comprised of commissioned chapters by top research scholars in supply chain management, revenue management, and e-commerce among others, all of which are grounded in information technologies and consumer demand research.

Service Enterprise Integration is developing business paradigm that is of considerable interest in both the "push" research the academic area and the "pull" research of industry. A prominent example of this development has been the transformation of IBM into a service enterprise and the labeling of its new business model as "On-Demand Business." In the recent past, manufacturing research and practice have done considerable work on the problem of service productivity. In fact, this work has extended the operations of many manufacturing firms to include the "service enterprise" component. IBM, GE, Siemens are several examples of this development. Using the service work done in manufacturing as a point of departure, SERVICE ENTERPRISE INTEGRATION: An Enterprise Engineering Perspective will examine a range of topics on IT-based enterprise integration. It will investigate the proven concepts, models, methods, and techniques in manufacturing operations and examine all their aspects that are relevant to the problem of service productivity. The result will be a systematic examination of the developing business model, service enterprise integration. The book will present a variety of on-going efforts to provide new results and solutions to the problem of service productivity. These presentations will be in the form of contributing chapters by leading researchers who will provide critical literature reviews, conceptual analysis, and solution-result-oriented applications on topics including ontology, reference models, ERP, supply chain integration, knowledge management, data security, and a variety of cases on particular applications.
