Abstract

Unmanned combat air vehicles - i.e. 'drones' - have become a prominent instrument in US efforts to counter objective (and subjective) cross-border terrorist threats with lethal force. As a result, critical questions abound on the legitimacy of their use. In a series of multidisciplinary essays by scholars with extensive knowledge of international norms, this book explores the question of legitimacy through the conceptual lenses of legality, morality and efficacy, and then closes with the consideration of a policy proposal aimed at incorporating all three indispensable elements. This book seeks to come to grips with the new reality of drone warfare by exploring if it can be used to preserve, rather than eat away at, legitimacy.

Abstract

Learn the five key skills needed to become a quadcopter developer: design, modeling, control, simulation, and implementation. This book provides a crash course on drone development for beginners and can also serve as a comprehensive reference for those who want a detailed guide for future projects. You'll review key features often missed in other books: a deeper review of controls, step by step modeling, and methods for simulating and designing drones. Although the quadcopter is used as the main example throughout the book, you'll also see how to apply the development knowledge to other aircrafts or aerial systems. Highly visual and easy to understand, this book features Simulink and Matlab tools, but the skills covered can be used in other environments such as Scilab or other programming languages. Drones To Go merges maker knowledge and technical information with scientific knowledge and design essentials. You will: Review the main families of control: geometric, linear, and common dynamic feedback control Understand the mathematics of a quadcopter Follow step-by-step instructions on modeling and control equations Focus on pedagogical development to answer any doubts in the design process.

Abstract

Introduction to Unmanned Aircraft Systems surveys the fundamentals of unmanned aircraft system (UAS) operations, from sensors, controls, and automation to regulations, safety procedures, and human factors. It is designed for the student or layperson and thus assumes no prior knowledge of UASs, engineering, or aeronautics. Dynamic and well-illustrated, the first edition of this popular primer was created in response to a need for a suitable university-level textbook on the subject.Fully updated and significantly expanded, this new Second Edition : Reflects the proliferation of technological capability, miniaturization, and demand for aerial intelligence in a post-9/11 world ; Presents the latest major commercial uses of UASs and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) ; Enhances its coverage with greater depth and support for more advanced coursework ; Provides material appropriate for introductory UAS coursework in both aviation and aerospace engineering programs. Introduction to Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Second Edition capitalizes on the expertise of contributing authors to instill a practical, up-to-date understanding of what it takes to safely operate UASs in the National Airspace System (NAS). Complete with end-of-chapter discussion questions, this book makes an ideal textbook for a first course in UAS operations. An instructor's manual is available with qualifying course adoption.

Abstract

With the extraordinary growth of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) in research, military, and commercial contexts, there has been a need for a reference that provides a comprehensive look at the latest research in the area. Filling this void, Smart Autonomous Aircraft: Flight Control and Planning for UAV introduces the advanced methods of flight control, planning, situation awareness, and decision making. This book is among the first to emphasize the theoretic and algorithmic side of control and planning in dynamic and uncertain environments. Focused on the latest theory that informs flight planning and control, it describes the use of computational intelligence modeling, control, and planning.Providing background information on fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles, the book proceeds from the basics to advanced methods, from classical to the most innovative. It examines the current state of the art and covers the topics required to assess the autonomy of UAVs. An ideal resource for researchers and practitioners working on solutions for implementing advanced capabilities in UAVs, the book details the mathematical underpinnings of each concept and includes illustrative case studies to reinforce understanding. Providing an interdisciplinary point of view on autonomous aircraft, the book reviews the different methodologies of control and planning used to create smart autonomous aircraft. The topics covered in this book have been derived from the author's research and teaching duties in smart aerospace and autonomous systems and from literature survey. Assuming an understanding of engineering at the undergraduate level, this book is suitable for advanced-level graduate students and PhD students enrolled in UAV or aerial robotics courses.
