Abstract

Proceedings of geotechnical sessions at the 2004 Annual Civil Engineering Conference and Exposition, held in Baltimore, Maryland, October 19-21, 2004. Sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publication presents 15 papers highlighting the latest developments in the rapidly evolving field of recycled materials in geotechnics. A number of recent federal and state initiatives have promoted use of these materials, which are seeing increasingly common use in engineering practice. The use of recycled materials is now required for some federally funded projects, and many states and municipalities offer economic incentives encouraging the use these materials in new transportation projects. Recent improvements in material processing and field construction techniques have made the use of these materials cost competitive for general civil engineering construction. The papers in this comprehensive volume report on a range of recycled materials including tire-derived aggregate, soil-tire shred blends, tire bales, fly ash, paper sludge, dredged materials, asphalt shingles, and foundry sands. It includes contributions from renowned authorities in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Abstract

This Special Issue on "Coastal Deposits: Environmental Implications, Mathematical Modeling, and Technological Development" includes seven high-quality, innovative research papers dealing with many scientific aspects regarding the coast, through mathematical modelling and innovative techniques in the study and preservation of the coastline from erosion, such as coastal watch camera installations, remote sensing, the use of biocementation, or analytical techniques, to assess incompatibilities in the sustainable use of the coast, including worrying issues as pollution of the marine environment and ecosystem deterioration.
