Beyond all instrumentalisation, the rooted Muslim presence in Italy raises problems of various kinds that are not easy to resolve. Inevitably, the need to comprehend the content of the principles and the rules governing Islam is destined to increase, expanding from the narrow circle of the specialists to the broader group of legal, social and cultural workers. This handy book, originally designed to give students easy-to-use teaching material, attempts to meet this demand via eleven lessons that address the specific profiles and the most topical issues of the Islamic legal system: the sources of the law, marriage, human rights, the holy war, female genital mutilation, the veil and the birth of the Islamic banks. The final section of the book devotes ample space to the solutions which the western legal systems have (or have not) elaborated to respond to the specific requirements of Muslims living in Europe.

The term 'vulnerability' is often used in law and policy to refer to disadvantaged, marginalized or excluded human beings. This book explores how a vulnerability focus in basic assistance policies can contribute to substantive equality and therefore to the realization of universal human rights in the migration context. It concentrates on the potential that such a vulnerability focus can have to mitigate stigmatization and stereotyping and to facilitate socio-economic participation.

This book fundamentally reinterprets the history of international human rights in the post-1945 era by documenting how pivotal the Global South was for their breakthrough. In stark contrast to other contemporary human rights historians who have focused almost exclusively on the 1940s and the 1970s - heavily privileging Western agency - Steven L. B. Jensen convincingly argues that it was in the 1960s that universal human rights had their breakthrough. This is a ground-breaking work that places race and religion at the center of these developments and focuses on a core group of states who led the human rights breakthrough, namely Jamaica, Liberia, Ghana, and the Philippines. They transformed the norms upon which the international community today is built. Their efforts in the 1960s post-colonial moment laid the foundation - in profound and surprising ways - for the so-called human rights revolution in the 1970s, when Western activists and states began to embrace human rights.

"International human rights have been largely understood and articulated as limitations to state sovereignty, leading to the widely shared view that only expert- driven non- politicized work can ultimately hold states accountable for not upholding them. This approach has had significant success but comes up against the boundaries of states' political will and actual influence in implementing human rights. The creation of the Human Rights Council, intensifying states' prominence within the system, especially through the establishment of the Universal Periodic Review, was an advance met with initial resistance by academic and practitioner communities. This book questions the blunt critique of "politicization" as not nuanced enough to understand progress, through the lenses of the Special Procedures of the Human Rights Council. These mechanisms are ideally located in the system to analyze the impact of politicization on the international human rights system. Depending on a political decision to be established and renewed, they are particularly sensitive to political factors. However, they are also held by independent experts. The scope of thematic mandates is universal preventing the application of bias associated with politically driven processes"
