Abstract

In the last two decades, the banking sector has been facing many challenges: technological revolution, new market players, 2008 crisis, confidence crisis, foreign shareholder factor, binding regulation, evolving behaviour of the customer, etc. Therefore, banks act defensively in order to face the challenging market conditions.
This was not without consequences on employment: one out of five jobs has been cut in the last 10 years. Meanwhile, the demand for banking products and services is increasing. Bank managers operate massive restructurings processes as they are willing to significantly reduce the number of bank branches.
Are these transformations directly linked with technological progress? Little academic research has been conducted regarding the influence of digitalization on employment. However, the social implications that restructuring involves are huge and damaging, which is worth studying.
Some questions whether the traditional bank is still a strong player of financial market, while GAFA, BATX, FinTechs and crowdfunding platforms have been entering the market and plan to offer similar financial services. Furthermore, the customer is now standalone and performs itself its daily banking transactions. In any case, bank occupations are going to be substantially transformed.
This thesis has been divided in four chapters: the purpose of the first one is to put the digital revolution into context, the second one studies the individual case of bank sector digitalization, the third one incorporates our quantitative analysis based on an econometric model and the fourth is related to alternative solutions for reducing massive layoffs in a journey of ethical reflection. Conclusions will include projections about the employment in banks and assumptions regarding the traditional bank of the future.
