This book aims at encompassing the panorama of design tools being developed, tested and adopted by researchers and professors at the Department of Design of Politecnico di Milano. The tools are organized in a taxonomy that reflects the path of choice of a possible user in need for the right tool for a task to be performed. The taxonomy is based on a formalization of the design process proposed by the authors, which characterizes the Design System at Politecnico di Milano. The book essentially offers two main contributions: an original taxonomy that guides towards the organization of design tools and their usage with different actors; a representative collection of design tools developed within the Department of Design of Politecnico di Milano with specific instructions on how to use them. Design Tools is addressed both to practitioners and academics in the field of design that are interested in getting to know more about the discourse around design tools in general and in particular how this discourse takes a shape within Politecnico di Milano and resolves in usable and shareable tools.

The book discusses how to include artificial intelligence (AI) systems in the early stages of the design process. Today designers need new tools capable of supporting them in dealing with the increasing project’s complexity and empowering their performances and capabilities. AI systems appear to be powerful means to enhance designers’ creativity. This assumption was tested in a workshop where sixteen participants collaborated with three AI systems throughout the creative phases of research, sketching, and color selection. Results show that designers can access a broader level of variance and inspiration while reducing the risk of fossilization by triggering lateral thinking through AI-generated data. Therefore, AI could significantly impact the creative phases of the design process if applied consciously. Being AI systems intelligent agents, the book treats the Human-AI collaboration as a collaboration between human agents, proposing a set of guidelines helpful to achieving an efficient partnership with the machine.

Design decision-making during the early stages of facade development has an influence on the final performance of buildings. Moreover, as sustainable buildings are becoming increasingly important, the role of the architects and designers is to integrate their design with the energetic analysis. Thus, this increases the design decision fatigue and requires considerable time to work through a building simulation tool, especially when there are many choices and possibilities. This study presents an approach based on building performance criteria. In particular, this thesis investigates a parametric design for façades of office buildings in cities with a climate similar to that of Belgium. The adapted methodology is to develop a parallel coordinator graph for facades in a user-friendly tool (Design Explorer) passing by a parametric design tool (Grasshopper) with environmental plugins (Honeybee and Ladybug) and based on European standards and norms. In addition, a focus on the most influential parameters that we should be aware of during the decision-making is discussed. Finally, we obtain many options to help façade designers choose between and arrive at the optimal choice combining the desired design target and their energetic needs. In conclusion, this thesis helps to reduce design decision fatigue and guide architects and designers towards a better decision.

Setting new developments in digital graphic construction methods against the backdrop of time-tested design principles results in extraordinary approaches to the design of self-supporting structures. Using their Armadillo Vault, which was recognised at the Biennale 2016 in Venice, the Block Research Group at ETH Zurich describes their research, development processes and visions of resource-saving, refined and steel-free support structures. Fundamental to their work is an intensive exploration of principles. The Block Research Group is the DETAIL Reader Prize Winner for 2016.

Interest in permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) is continuously increasing worldwide, especially with the increased use of renewable energy and the electrification of transports. This book contains the successful submissions of fifteen papers to a Special Issue of Energies on the subject area of “Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines”. The focus is on permanent magnet synchronous machines and the electrical systems they are connected to. The presented work represents a wide range of areas. Studies of control systems, both for permanent magnet synchronous machines and for brushless DC motors, are presented and experimentally verified. Design studies of generators for wind power, wave power and hydro power are presented. Finite element method simulations and analytical design methods are used. The presented studies represent several of the different research fields on permanent magnet machines and electric drives.
