Quand on cherche à comprendre et à analyser l'histoire de l'architecture commerciale, on pense généralement au développement des grands magasins. Ces cathédrales emblématiques de la consommation sont synonymes de modernité, d'innovations techniques et de nouvelles pratiques commerciales. Mais de son côté, la boutique, grâce à ses caractéristiques spatiales, temporelles et plastiques, se révèle un sujet perméable aux transformations de la société et aux représentations d'une certaine culture populaire. = When you try to understand and to analyse the history of commercial architecture, you will generally think of the development of department stores. Those emblematic cathedrals of consumption became the synonyms of modernity, of technical innovations and of new commercial practices. However the shop, the 'boutique', for its part, thanks to Its spatial, temporal and plastic features, would turn out to be permeable to societal transformations and to the representations of a certain popular culture. = Wanneer we de geschiedenis van de winkelarchitectuur willen begrijpen en analyseren, denken we doorgaans aan de ontwikkeling van de warenhuizen. Deze emblematische kathedralen van de consumptie staan symbool voor moderniteit, technische innovaties en nieuwe verkooppraktijken. Omgekeerd is de winkel, dankzij zijn ruimtelijke, tijdelijke en plastische kenmerken, bijzonder gevoelig voor de veranderingen in de maatschappij en voor devoorstellingen van een bepaalde populaire cultuur.
