Abstract

In this study we develop a flexible modeling toolbox for decentralized electricity systems with an agent-based simulation approach at its core. Two RES-E generation models for wind and PV each with a high temporal and spatial resolution are presented and approaches to model specific aspects of the demand side in detail are introduced. The implementation of an AC load flow algorithm is described and the concept of a market-based congestion management mechanism is outlined.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Grid monitoring is an important task for operators of the distribution grid, as it allowsthem to identify and diagnose problems in the system. This can save energy and money,as well as improve system reliability. There are a number of different methods that grid operators can use to monitorthe system. One popular approach is to use data collected by sensors located on thedistribution grid. However, the data from these sensors can be rather expensive tocollect and store; therefore they may not be suitable for smaller network operators. Someoperators also use electrical measurements taken directly from the grid’s conductors, butthese are also not practical for smaller networks. One potential use for blockchain in grid monitoring is to store data about theproduction of electricity on the distribution grid. This data could be used to improvesystem reliability and optimize energy use. We developed a proof of concept softwarecalled "MonitORES" that could utilize this technology to achieve these goals. The proof of concept developed was based on Hyperledger Fabric and showedthat monitoring and control operations can be achieved by blockchain. Analyzing theprobabilities of successful attacks on the current system and on the proposed architecture, the results showed how a distributed system reduces the probabilities of such attacks.

Abstract

The fourth industrial revolution aims to transform production systems. In this work, Logical Time which is a control principle for distributed systems is transferred to material handling systems with decentralized control. The GridSorter, a modular sorter with grid-like structure, is chosen as showcase system. The system is proven to be deadlock-free and is robust against varying transport times. The time-window-based route reservation process is described as Iterative Deepening A*.

Abstract

Mathematical optimization techniques are among the most successful tools for controlling technical systems optimally with feasibility guarantees. Yet, they are often centralized—all data has to be collected in one central and computationally powerful entity. Methods from distributed optimization overcome this limitation. Classical approaches, however, are often not applicable due to non-convexities. This work develops one of the first frameworks for distributed non-convex optimization.

Abstract

Currently, 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to electricity. In particular, rural areas are generally not served by the national power grid due to the large population dispersion and the low demand for electricity. To overcome this problem, decentralized electricity generation solutions are implemented, independent of the main grid. This thesis deals with the comparison of the different technologies of decentralized electricity production in terms of economic, environmental and technical aspects in rural Africa. Carried out as part of an internship at Engineers Without Borders, an association specialized in the field of rural electrification in sub-Saharan Africa, the work is then devoted to a practical case related to an ongoing project of the association. In this context, the potential electricity generation technologies for the electrification of a hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo are studied. The study shows that photovoltaic installations remain the most appropriate for such projects because of their ease of use. In addition, the environmental and financial impacts are much lower than when using a fossil fuel generator, the most common solution currently. However, it is important to note that photovoltaic panels remain a complex technology, difficult to repair and requiring large financial investments, which makes the solution difficult to access without previous subsidies.

Abstract

In the recent years the electrical power utilities have undergone rapid restructuring process worldwide. Indeed, with deregulation, advancement in technologies and concern about the environmental impacts, competition is particularly fostered in the generation side, thus allowing increased interconnection of generating units to the utility networks. These generating sources are called distributed generators (DG) and defined as the plant which is directly connected to distribution network and is not centrally planned and dispatched. These are also called embedded or dispersed generation units. The rating of the DG systems can vary between few kW to as high as 100 MW. Various new types of distributed generator systems, such as microturbines and fuel cells in addition to the more traditional solar and wind power are creating significant new opportunities for the integration of diverse DG systems to the utility. Interconnection of these generators will offer a number of benefits such as improved reliability, power quality, efficiency, alleviation of system constraints along with the environmental benefits. Unlike centralized power plants, the DG units are directly connected to the distribution system; most often at the customer end. The existing distribution networks are designed and operated in radial configuration with unidirectional power flow from centralized generating station to customers. The increase in interconnection of DG to utility networks can lead to reverse power flow violating fundamental assumption in their design. This creates complexity in operation and control of existing distribution networks and offers many technical challenges for successful introduction of DG systems. Some of the technical issues are islanding of DG, voltage regulation, protection and stability of the network. Some of the solutions to these problems include designing standard interface control for individual DG systems by taking care of their diverse characteristics, finding new ways to/or install and control these DG systems and finding new design for distribution system. DG has much potential to improve distribution system performance. The use of DG strongly contributes to a clean, reliable and cost effective energy for future. This book deals with several aspects of the DG systems such as benefits, issues, technology interconnected operation, performance studies, planning and design. Several authors have contributed to this book aiming to benefit students, researchers, academics, policy makers and professionals. We are indebted to all the people who either directly or indirectly contributed towards the publication of this book.
