'The Evolutionary Bases of Consumption 'by Gad Saad applies Darwinian principles in understanding our consumption patterns and the products of popular culture that most appeal to individuals. The first and only scholarly work to do so, this is a captivating study of the adaptive reasons behind our behaviors, cognitions, emotions, and perceptions. This lens of analysis suggests how we come to make selections such as choosing a mate, the foods we eat, the gifts that we offer, and more. It also highlights how numerous forms of dark side consumption, including pathological gambling, compulsive buying, pornographic addiction, and eating disorders, possess a Darwinian etiology. Engaging and diverse in scope, the book maps consumption phenomena onto four key Darwinian modules: survival, reproduction, kin selection, and reciprocal altruism. As an interesting proposal, the author suggests that media and advertising contents exist in their particular forms because they are a reflection of our evolved human nature& negating the notion that they exist through a causal link, as proposed by social constructivists. The link between evolutionary theory and consumption behaviors is detailed throughout the book via an examination of: *appearance-enhancing products and services; *financial and physical risk-taking; *use of sexual imagery and the depictions of women in advertising; and *television programs, movies, songs, music videos, literature, religion, and art. 'The Evolutionary Bases of Consumption 'will appeal to evolutionists who desire to explore new areas wherein evolutionary theory can be applied; consumer and marketing scholars who wish to learn about the ways in which biological-and evolutionary-based theorizing can be infused into the consumer behavior/marketing/advertising disciplines; as well as other interdisciplinary scholars interested in gaining knowledge about the power of evolutionary theory in explaining a wide range of behavioral phenomena.

De toekomst van het Europese consumentenbeleid doet zich uit het verleden kennen. Naast de groei van Europese regels ter bescherming van de consument is er in stijgende mate sprake van een daadwerkelijk betekenisvolle doorwerking van deze regels in de rechtsorde van de lidstaten. De analyse van oorsprong en ontwikkeling laat zien dat de door de Europese instellingen gekozen strategie voor de uitbouw ervan niet steeds dezelfde bleef. Sinds 2006 plaatst de Europese Commissie het consumentenbeleid voluit in de “Agenda van de burger”. Consumentenbescherming vormt daarin één van de instrumenten voor het zichtbaar maken van de voordelen van de Unie. Wij, de consumenten van Europa, vormen mee de interne markt en verwachten van de overheid vertrouwenwekkende maatregelen. In hun bijdragen bieden Gert Straetmans, Amaryllis Verhoeven, Henri Swennen en Ewoud Hondius de lezer de kans en mogelijkheid te bepalen of deze verwachting naar huidig en komend Europees (consumenten) recht wordt ingelost. Knelpunten worden niet verdoezeld, een open vooruit- en toekomstblik geboden. De lezer wacht menig boeiend uur. Het boek “Het EG-consumentenacquis: nu en straks” vormt het vijfde deel in de Reeks Studies Europees Recht Universiteit Antwerpen.

Vers une protection renforcée des consommateurs et utilisateurs de plateformesLe cadre normatif applicable aux consommateurs, dans leurs relations avec des entreprises, a été fortement modifié en 2022, pour transposer en droit belge les directives 2019/770 et 2019/771 ainsi que la directive Omnibus.Les règles en matière de garantie légale, figurant dans l’ancien Code civil, ont ainsi été amendées et étendues aux contenus et aux services numériques.Dans le Code de droit économique, les principales nouveautés concernent les obligations de transparence, le droit de rétractation, les annonces de réduction de prix et les sanctions administratives (livre VI et livre XV).Parmi les entreprises du numérique, les plateformes sont visées par ces nouvelles obligations, outre qu’elles doivent aussi tenir compte, comme d’autres intermédiaires de services de la société de l’information, de l’adoption du règlement sur les services numériques (Digital Services Act – D.S.A.).Enfin, sur le plan procédural, on doit s’attendre à d’autres changements à brève échéance, pour transposer la directive 2020/1828 relative aux actions représentatives visant à protéger les intérêts collectifs des consommateurs.L’objectif de ce volume de la CUP est de présenter ces nouvelles règles, en mettant l’accent sur leurs conséquences concrètes et sur la manière de les intégrer au mieux dans la pratique des entreprises.

Nieuw recht inzake koop en digitale inhoud en diensten gaat in op de impact op het Belgische recht van Richtlijn 2019/771 inzake consumentenkoop en Richtlijn 2019/770 inzake digitale inhoud en digitale diensten. Beide richtlijnen vragen immers grondige wijzigingen van de Belgische wetgeving betreffende de koop en de consumentenkoop en meer in het algemeen van het Belgische contractenrecht. Dit boek schetst vooreerst het belang en de impact van deze nieuwe richtlijnen en legt de link tussen deze richtlijnen en de Moderniseringsrichtlijn 2019/2161. Er is verder ruim aandacht voor de totstandkoming en het toepassingsgebied van de nieuwe wetgeving, de afbakeningsproblemen, de nieuwe regels inzake conformiteit en remedies, het bewijs en de bewijslast en voor de verhaalsrechten in de contractuele keten.
