Abstract

This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 22 papers focusing on existing, widely accepted soil constitutive models, from simple to complex, and present the overall model framework, calibration procedures, and possible implementation. An overview paper discusses features of different classes of soil models and their advantages and disadvantages. For many models in this book and in the literature, these features are tabulated in a series of tables. The models are then categorized in terms of their completeness with respect to eight different model capabilities. This book has been prepared for soil constitutive modelers and practitioners who want to learn more about the underlying principles, calibration methods and implementation issues of many different proven soil models. The overview paper is especially helpful to those who are not experienced constitutive modelers to understand the different components of soil models and their effect on predictions.

Abstract

This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 65 international papers and represents the latest advances in the static and dynamic behavior of soils and rocks, including constitutive modeling and numerical methods. The book begins with two keynote articles that discuss soil constitutive modeling. The first section of the book discusses theoretical concepts and experimental procedures of soil behavior and laboratory testing. The second section's papers span from advanced concepts in rock mechanics to the interactions in constructed facilities. It also includes numerical applications of problems in rocks. The third section focuses on modeling soil behavior, with many of the papers using field and laboratory experimental data to verify their findings. Finally, the fourth section discusses the latest advances in soil and soil structure interactions under dynamic excitation. It contains results from work using shaking tables, wave induced loading, vibrations and numerical simulations.

Abstract

Proceedings of Geo-Frontiers 2005, held in Austin, Texas, January 24-26, 2005. Sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 44 papers that consider site characterization as an important first step in all geotechnical projects, given that site-specific geomaterials are hidden beneath the ground surface. The use of drilling, sampling, geophysical techniques, with in-situ and laboratory testing can be combined to develop a set of data with which to formulate a simplified representation of the subsurface geostratigraphy and related soil parameters for analysis and design. This is best handled through analytical and/or constitutive models that can help organize the collected information into a coherent and rational framework. These frameworks can guide the interpretation of soil properties and parameters, resulting in the design of foundations, tunnels, earth dams, excavations, and seismic systems that are safe, economical, and perform well. Topics include: recent improvements in three-dimensional graphical visualizations of the subsurface; remote sensing; tomographic imaging techniques; advances in laboratory testing; detection of strata interfaces and thin layers; calibration of constitutive models, as related to site characterization; and research advances to improve the ability of geotechnical engineers to map the subsurface, discern anomalous conditions, anticipate construction problems, and better predict the response of the new facilities placed on or within the ground.

Abstract

Electromagnetic complex media are artificial materials that affect the propagation of electromagnetic waves in surprising ways not usually seen in nature. Because of their wide range of important applications, these materials have been intensely studied over the past twenty-five years, mainly from the perspectives of physics and engineering. But a body of rigorous mathematical theory has also gradually developed, and this is the first book to present that theory. Designed for researchers and advanced graduate students in applied mathematics, electrical engineering, and physics, this book introduces the electromagnetics of complex media through a systematic, state-of-the-art account of their mathematical theory. The book combines the study of well posedness, homogenization, and controllability of Maxwell equations complemented with constitutive relations describing complex media. The book treats deterministic and stochastic problems both in the frequency and time domains. It also covers computational aspects and scattering problems, among other important topics. Detailed appendices make the book self-contained in terms of mathematical prerequisites, and accessible to engineers and physicists as well as mathematicians.

Abstract

Geothermal energy is the thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth's core, mantle, and crust. Geothermal technologies are used to generate electricity and to heat and cool buildings. To develop accurate models for heat and mass transfer applications involving fluid flow in geothermal applications or reservoir engineering and petroleum industries, a basic knowledge of the rheological and transport properties of the materials involved (drilling fluid, rock properties, etc.)—especially in high-temperature and high-pressure environments—are needed. This Special Issue considers all aspects of fluid flow and heat transfer in geothermal applications, including the ground heat exchanger, conduction and convection in porous media. The emphasis here is on mathematical and computational aspects of fluid flow in conventional and unconventional reservoirs, geothermal engineering, fluid flow, and heat transfer in drilling engineering and enhanced oil recovery (hydraulic fracturing, CO2 injection, etc.) applications.
