How can smart technology open up new design opportunities - for the design, the execution, and the operation of buildings and for the digitalization of construction? A hitherto unusual conception of the building as a cybernetic architectural system forms the basis of this integrated design approach. The authors - architects and engineers with extensive design experience - contribute an overview of current technical components of automation and communication systems, as well as a summary of relevant laws, standards, and guidelines. Six example projects demonstrate completed applications at different scales, from a single-family residence to office buildings, and through to the Elbphilharmonie concert hall - amply illustrated in text, drawings, and photos.

The proceedings of the BIM 2015 conference give details of how Building Information Modelling (BIM) tools and techniques have fundamentally altered the manner in which modern construction teams operate, the processes through which designs are evolved, and the relationships between conceptual, detail, construction and life cycle stages.

"Addressing building owners, developers, and managers, this text covers how building information management (BIM) complements facility management (FM) systems to achieve significant lifecycle advantages. It includes coverage of the guidelines for BIM in FM as developed by owners such as the General Services Administration, the COBie2 (BIM document standard) used to collect and communicate facility equipment information, and a list of software for BIM/FM integration. It also offers six real-life case studies including the Texas A&M Health Science Center, the USC School of Cinematic Arts, and the State of WI Facilities"--

"From the cutting-edge of technology comes this book on Building Information Modeling (BIM), the newest technology in the AEC industry that allows the professional to create 3D models of a building that includes much more data than a traditional 2D CAD file. Developing BIM Content explains the type of information that can go into a BIM model from a vendor-neutral perspective and explores different methods for organizing content. For anyone interested in creating feature-rich BIM object and models that work on any platform, this is a must-have reference"-- "Provides an overview of the different industry standards currently being used (CSI's Masterformat, Uniformat, and Omniclass; Industry Foundation Classes) and how one can leverage them when creating objects and models Walks through what the different types of information are (parameters, attributes, constraints, and conditions) and how they inter-relate How to use this information to create and implement a data management strategy for your objects and models. The strategies and best practices outlined in this book are vendor-neutral; they can be used by any professional, regardless of the software platform in use"--

The use of digital representations to aid in projects—Building Information Modeling (BIM)—is gaining traction worldwide as an effective and beneficial approach to executing projects that can reduce errors and improve project results. These crucial benefits are prompting many businesses and governments to mandate its use, while others search for ways to grow and incentivize the practice. In Incentivizing Collaborative BIM-Enabled Projects: A Synthesis of Agency and Behavioral Approaches, Chen-Yu Chang, PhD, explains the current state of BIM use in three distinct countries: China, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Following multiple case studies in each country, Professor Chang explores the explicit and implicit motivators that may drive BIM participation and the factors that can influence its effectiveness. The case studies offer multiple perspectives on why and how BIM-enabled projects are adopted and provide a lens for understanding BIM at varying levels of maturity and in different environments. Understanding the motivators behind the current state of BIM-enabled projects facilitates the design of incentive structures for future BIM projects. As BIM continues to evolve and transform the industry, this research provides valuable insight into the best practices for incentivizing its use. This theoretical approach gives researchers and organizations new tools and ideas to help build their own strategies to encourage BIM use and better understand its place in managing projects.
