Public and private, traffic and open space, planned and spontaneous - our idea of a city is characterised by opposites. However, the contributors to this bilingual book show that these poles can also be consciously connected. The urban building blocks from São Paolopresent surprisingly idiosyncratic city scenes: People dancing along the motorway, strolling through the stone archipelago, splashing around in front of the city skyline…Many of the case studies are linked to the ideas of the Brazilian urban planner Francisco Prestes Maia. Kurt Naef's games are the "Rolls Royce" of wooden games. In a fast-moving and electronically oriented time, they maintain their permanent position in the marketplace with timeless design; loving, high-quality workmanship; and sound pedagogical design. The broad range of products primarily consists of puzzles and games of skill, which enable the player to experience and train in spatial imagination, geometric principles, and coordination. The Swiss cabinetmaker and furniture builder Kurt Naef began to produce his timeless, highquality wooden games in the late 1950s, developing them on his own and with designers. He reproduced a number of classic games by celebrated designers of the Bauhaus. Naef's games are represented in the collections of important museums, for example in the Museum of Modern Art and in Japan.

Building blocks are practical materials for playing, learning and working at kindergartens, schools, universities and companies. How did building blocks, which were primarily established as toys for children, come to be practical materials used in professional and educational settings? This study explores the historical implications of particular sets of building blocks in the interdisciplinary consolidation and transformation of techniques, materials, discourses and subjects. By mapping the genealogy of building blocks from Fröbel's »gifts« to their current systematization as interlocked blocks, this study proposes that building blocks should be understood not exclusively as concrete objects, but as the materiality of a combinatorial program, which delineates a modular system characterized by a code of composition, a context-neutrality and a semantic component.

This work explores the mechanisms of self-assembly of particles at the millimeter scale using capillary interactions. It focuses particularly on the design of "capillary codons," objects whose interactions are dictated by positive or negative capillary charges. These interactions enable the creation of complex structures, similar to the pairing of biological codons and anticodons. The thesis is divided into several parts, including a literature review on self-assembly, with a particular focus on anisotropic particles and capillary interactions. The design of capillary codons relies on additive manufacturing techniques (3D printing) and leads to numerical simulations to model the interactions between these codons. Experiments are then conducted to validate the theoretical models by observing the actual interactions between the printed codons. The results show that the geometry and spacing of the codon branches strongly influence their pairing behavior. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that capillary codons can be used to simulate complex self-assembly processes, opening up new possibilities for applications in advanced materials fabrication.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) replaced the old and battered Data Protection Directive on 25 May 2018 after a long-drawn reform. The rapidly evolving technological landscape will test the ability of the GDPR to effectively achieve the goals of protecting personal data and the free movement of data. This book proposes a technological supplement to achieve the goal of data protection as enshrined in the GDPR. The proposal comes in the form of digital identity management platforms built on blockchain technology. However, the very structure of blockchain poses some significant challenges in terms of compatibility with the GDPR. Accordingly, the claim of GDPR being a technologically neutral legislation is examined. The compatibility of a blockchain-based solution is scrutinised on the parameters of data protection principles like accountability, data minimisation, control and data protection by design in conjunction with the right to be forgotten and right to data portability.
