In the 20th century, cumulative millions of readers received books by mail from clubs like the Book-of-the-Month Club, the Book Society or BertelsmannClub. This Element offers an introduction to book clubs as a distribution channel and cultural phenomenon, and shows that book clubs and book commerce are linked inextricably. It argues that a global perspective is necessary to understand the cultural and economic impact of book clubs in the 20th and into the 21st century. It also explores central reasons for book club membership, condensing them into four succinct categories: convenience, community, concession and, most importantly, curation. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

This volume brings together contributions by specialists from a variety of disciplines discussing the epistemological history of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and the transmission of knowledge in the Crown of Aragon. They consider, among other things, the materiality of texts, the linguistic models employed, the persistence of ancient models of perceiving the world, up to the establishment of new ways of thinking and knowledge transfer.

The medieval Ashkenazi manuscripts of the Small Book of Commandments (Sefer Mitzvot Katan, or 'SeMaK' for short), which was written by Isaac of Corbeil, attest a scribal culture in which rabbinical knowledge and piety were combined with creative freedom in manuscript design. This study is concerned with the creation, composition and circulation of manuscripts of the SeMaK and concentrates on the book as an artefact. The focus of the author's attention is the manuscripts' material nature, their artistic embellishment and the personal touches that scribes added to them. With the act of writing a text and decorating a SeMaK manuscript, they 'appropriated' the text, so to speak, giving it a character of its very own. They drew on a visual language in the process - or rather, on visual languages, which occupy a special place between pure writing culture and pure painting culture. It was in this area 'in between' the two that spontaneous touches arose, ranging from changes in the physical arrangement of the text (mise-en-page) to drawings and doodles added in the margins. An examination of paratextual elements broadens the reader's knowledge about Jewish scribal culture and grants insights into medieval book art, material culture and Judeo-Christian co-existence in the Middle Ages as well as throwing some light on Jewish values, ideals and eschatological hopes.

"Marvel is famous for their fantastic superheroes. Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man and dozens of other costumed avengers from the Marvel Universe are recognized the world over. In the 21st Century, Marvel has expanded just what it means to be a superhero, and who can wear the tights. Panthers, Hulks & Ironhearts explores the importance of ethnicity in many of Marvels newest heroes (and a few of their oldest) in the comics, movies, and on television. New characters of color like the Pakistani-American Ms. Marvel, the Latina Ms. America, the Korean-American Hulk and Silk, as well as new takes on old heroes such as the African American versions of Spider-Man, Captain America, and Iron Man, have joined such landmark heroes as Black Panther and Luke Cage to diversify the role of superhero. These "All New, All Different" heroes can defeat super villains, but they can also help explain important cultural concepts like stereotyping, Orientalism, repatriation, whitewashing, and identification"--

Late medieval manuscripts and early modern print history form the focus of this volume. It includes new work on the compilation of some important medieval manuscript miscellanies and major studies of merchant patronage and of a newly revealed woman patron, alongside explorations of medieval texts and the post-medieval reception history of Langland, Chaucer and Nicholas Love. It thus pays a fitting tribute to the career of Professor A.S.G. Edwards, highlighting his scholarly interests and demonstrating the influence of his achievements. Carol M. Meale is Senior Research Fellow at the University of Bristol; Derek Pearsall is Professor Emeritus at Harvard University and Honorary Research Professor at the University of York.
