Abstract

Bipartite graphs are perhaps the most basic of objects in graph theory, both from a theoretical and practical point of view. However, sometimes they have been considered only as a special class in some wider context. This book deals solely with bipartite graphs. Together with traditional material, the reader will also find many unusual results. Essentially all proofs are given in full; many of these have been streamlined specifically for this text. Numerous exercises of all standards have also been included. The theory is illustrated with many applications especially to problems in timetabling, chemistry, communication networks and computer science. For the most part the material is accessible to any reader with a graduate understanding of mathematics. However, the book contains advanced sections requiring much more specialized knowledge, which will be of interest to specialists in combinatorics and graph theory.

Abstract

This introductory text in graph theory focuses on partial cubes, which are graphs that are isometrically embeddable into hypercubes of an arbitrary dimension, as well as bipartite graphs, and cubical graphs. This branch of graph theory has developed rapidly during the past three decades, producing exciting results and establishing links to other branches of mathematics.   Currently, Graphs and Cubes is the only book available on the market that presents a comprehensive coverage of cubical graph and partial cube theories.  Many exercises, along with historical notes, are included at the end of every chapter, and readers are encouraged to explore the exercises fully, and use them as a basis for research projects.   The prerequisites for this text include familiarity with basic mathematical concepts and methods on the level of undergraduate courses in discrete mathematics, linear algebra, group theory, and topology of Euclidean spaces. While the book is intended for lower-division graduate students in mathematics, it will be of interest to a much wider audience; because of their rich structural properties, partial cubes appear in theoretical computer science, coding theory, genetics, and even the political and social sciences.

Abstract

This book contains the successful invited submissions to a Special Issue of Symmetry on the subject of ""Graph Theory"". Although symmetry has always played an important role in Graph Theory, in recent years, this role has increased significantly in several branches of this field, including but not limited to Gromov hyperbolic graphs, the metric dimension of graphs, domination theory, and topological indices. This Special Issue includes contributions addressing new results on these topics, both from a theoretical and an applied point of view.

Abstract

The work introduces the fundamentals concerning the discrete information theory (measures of discrete information, mathematical modeling of discrete memoryless/memory sources and of discrete transmission channels) and the coding theory with its main components: compression, error control and encryption. The understanding of the theoretical matter is supported by many examples. One particular emphasis is put on the explanation of Genomic Coding. Many examples throughout the book are chosen from this particular area and several parts of the book are devoted to this exciting implication of coding. The book is interesting and highly valuable for educational purposes for students and all those who need basics in information theory and coding. Monica E. Borda is Professor in Information Theory and Coding, Cryptography and Genomic Signal Processing at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, having more than 30 years experience of education and research in the topics covered by the book. She has conducted research and Ph.D. thesis in coding theory, nonlinear signal and image processing, image watermarking, genomic signal processing, having authored and coauthored more than 100 research papers in national and international journals and conference proceedings. She is author and coauthor of 5 books in the mentioned fields.

Abstract

This complete introduction to two-dimensional (2-D) information theory and coding provides the key techniques for modeling data and estimating their information content. Throughout, special emphasis is placed on applications to transmission, storage, compression, and error protection of graphic information. The book begins with a self-contained introduction to information theory, including concepts of entropy and channel capacity, which requires minimal mathematical background knowledge. It then introduces error-correcting codes, particularly Reed-Solomon codes, the basic methods for error-correction, and codes applicable to data organized in 2-D arrays. Common techniques for data compression, including compression of 2-D data based on application of the basic source coding, are also covered, together with an advanced chapter dedicated to 2-D constrained coding for storage applications. Numerous worked examples illustrate the theory, whilst end-of-chapter exercises test the reader's understanding, making this an ideal book for graduate students and also for practitioners in the telecommunications and data storage industries.
